I was hired to teach in Sumter, South Carolina beginning in August of 1973. I received my BS in English Education in December 1972, and earned 12 quarter hours toward my M.Ed in Reading at UT while still in Knoxville. I married in June of 1973 and we moved to Sumter immediately after. I resumed my studies at the University of South Carolina at Columbia, completing my M.Ed in Reading in August 1975.
I taught 10th grade English at Sumter High School until December 1975, when I began the reading lab at Wilder Elementary. I continued in the Reading Lab until 1986 when I became the first school counselor at Wilder Elementary School.
I went to seminary in 1999 and became a United Methodist pastor. I will retire in June, and hope to do part-time tutoring in retirement. My son had difficulty in school, and that has added to my heart for students who struggle in school due to reading problems and other learning difficulties.
I would like to meet in a public place, such as the UT library, for tutoring. I have written sermons and Bible Studies since completing my teaching career after 17 years.
If you have questions for me or would like to share about how I can help in the areas in which you struggle, I encourage you to call or email me. After that discussion we can schedule our first tutoring session. I look forward to meeting you. I was hired to teach in Sumter, South Carolina beginning in August of 1973. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I received a Master's of Divinity from Candler School of Theology of Emory University. The three years of study required of my degree included courses in Old Testament and New Testament of the Bible. I took other courses, such as Paul's Jesus and Christian Education that added to my understanding of leading Bible Studies. I taught Bible Studies at two churches in South Carolina, and at five churches in Tennessee. I wrote a Bible Study about Dinah, daughter of Jacob, sister of the men including in the "Twelve Tribes of Israel" alluded to in ancient maps of Israel.
