About John

I went to school to study physics and ended up getting a Ph.D. in condensed matter physics. After working in applied physics for a while I realized that I really missed the experience of teaching. My goal now is to continue working at Colleges that focus on education and work on creating strong distance learning techniques and problems to bring STEM education to those who do not currently have easy access to it.

I have worked with students who have struggled in everything form algebra to calculus 3 in math. I also tutor undergraduate physics, the physics portion of engineering fundamentals and statics and dynamics. I like to focus on building a strong foundation in critical thinking while determining what is missing from the student's academic tool box so they not only can complete, but understand the material that is being presented to them. Math is the language of the natural world and I hope to help students see the purpose of the subjects they are studying making them eager to learn more.

I hope to be able to help you reach your educational goals and build your educational foundation as well. My goal is to put myself out of a job so I look forward to seeing you and working with you. Contact me and I will respond as quickly as possible with times I am available.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is an important foundation for all math and science you will learn from now on. I tutor Algebra mainly with college students though I am comfortable working with high school students as well. My formal math education includes a minor in Math.

Algebra 2

I have a math minor from the University of Tennessee Knoxville and a Ph.D. in physics. I tutor Algebra 2 at a local community college. I like to focus on building or repairing the math foundation the student has to help them in this class and make their next math classes easier for them.

Calculus

I tutor Calculus at a local community college and have a minor in math form the University of Tennessee. I have a Ph.D. in physics and calculus is a foundation of the study of physics. I have strong theory skills in this subject as well as applications to more real situations to explain the importance of calculus.

Elementary Math

I have worked for many years with students who struggle with math. I find that most students who struggle later in math have a weak foundation in the basics. I also come from a family where primary education is part of the family business so I am use to working with and lesson planning for younger children. Because of my teaching philosophy and family experience I enjoy working with math and science students from the very beginning.

Geometry

I have a Ph.D. in physics and work with students who need help in math and physics. Having a physics background requires a lot of spacial problem solving which allows me to help students understand geometry problems due to its visual nature.

Physics

I have a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. I have tutored physics for a few years while in school and now do so at a local community college. Any class you are struggling with in physics I should be able to help!

Prealgebra

I have worked for many years with students who struggle with math. I find that most students who struggle later in math have a weak foundation in the basics. Because of my teaching philosophy I enjoy working with students as early as possible making algebra and pre-algebra particularly important to me even though I tutor math through calculus III.

Precalculus

I have a math minor from the University of Tennessee Knoxville and a Ph.D. in physics. I tutor Precalculus at a local community college. I like to focus on building or repairing the math foundation the student has to help them in this class and make their next math classes easier for them.

Trigonometry

I have a math minor from the University of Tennessee Knoxville and a Ph.D. in physics. Trigonometry is key to solving mechanics problems in physics so I have a lot of experience tutoring this subject in both physics and pre-calculus. I like to focus on building or repairing the math foundation the student has to help them in this class and make their next math classes easier for them.

Very knowledgeable and patient

John is an excellent tutor. He makes it very easy for my kids to understand AP Calculus. He knows the material and explains it in a way they can understand.
