Through the years, I've had several students tell me that they had never really understood math until working with me. That's why I do what I do: I want people to understand the beauty and the power of mathematics, and I'm good at getting that understanding across to students. Of course, we all need to pass tests as well, and I can help you with that too. We'll break every problem down. We'll understand our tools and know when to use them. My approach to teaching/tutoring is to meet students where they are and explain math concepts in a way that each student can understand. Because not all students learn the same way, I am flexible in my teaching style, but do find that clear explanation of subject matter with supported practice is the most affective approach to teaching mathematics. My initial sessions tend to focus on getting to know students' needs, setting goals for our future sessions, and establishing a plan for future work.
Most recently I taught advanced High School math and Algebra II. Prior to teaching in high school, I taught at Indiana University and tutored there and at Middle Tennessee State University, as well. All together, I have beyond 10 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I have earned my Masters in Mathematics from Indiana University, and have also completed work toward my PhD. I am comfortable and confident tutoring all high school and college level courses. I have also received additional training to teach Internationale Baccalaureate (IB) courses.
Math is a skill that anyone can learn. Whether you're a great student wanting to take the next step, or struggling just to pass, or anywhere in between, please contact me to discuss how I can help you meet your goals. Brent is tutoring my son and two of his friends for Honors Algebra 2. Each student improved their unit test scores after just one session. Brent was able to explain concepts in a way they understood. Very pleased!
Brent was very good about being patient with me and walking me through step by step on problems I had questions about. He did not make me feel stupid for asking very basic questions. He is able to wait until you have a question to speak instead of trying to lecture you about the material. He is extremely knowledgeable in statistics and is able to show the simplest and most common sense way to approach problems. I would recommend to anyone.
Brent has presented a systematic approach to working calculus problems that had an immediate impact on my understanding of problem solving and performance on tests and quizzes in the classroom!
My daughter's experience was fantastic - Brent was so helpful and after one of his sessions, tested 1 grade higher than she had been scoring in the past....we will call him again!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have beyond a masters in math. I considered becoming an actuary before deciding to go a different route. I passed 2 of the actuary exams myself. I understand the format of the tests; I know the material, and I know what it takes to pass the exams. Prior to teaching in high school, I taught at Indiana University and tutored there and at Middle Tennessee State University, as well.
I have over 10 years experience teaching and tutoring algebra.
I have over 10 years of experience teaching and tutoring calculus.
