About Joel

I am currently a classroom teacher working for the Knox County School system. I have worked in education for the last 7 years and have had the opportunity to travel the world working with Educators from England, Ireland, Germany, Russia and the U.S. to enhance teaching practices that directly benefit student achievement. Using inquiry based teaching practices and practical applications of concepts, I help to provide students with their own contextual understand of each subject. My personal teaching philosophy is that I help to facilitate student understanding and empower students to take control of their learning process.

I am also a career changer. Before becoming an educator, I worked in the television and film industry as a videographer and engineer, so I find myself having the unique perspective of working with the subjects I teach. I love teaching Math and Science and have taught basic pre-algebra concepts to advanced calculus and A.P. Physics courses. No matter the level of need I can assist students with difficult concepts and learning struggles.

Having graduated from the University of Tennessee in a pilot STEM educator pre-service program, I was able to not only get my degree in Physics and Math, but also concurrently get my teaching licensure through the VolsTeach program. As an educational ambassador in Knoxville, I have worked at Pond Gap community school as a tutor and volunteer and done various tutoring jobs for students all over the county, and strive to provide as much educational assistance as possible.

My goal is simple, help the student become the best learner they can be so that they can enjoy the success that comes with hard work and perseverance.
