William and Mary
I graduated from the College of William and Mary in 2006 with a BA in History and minors in Political Science and Classics. I am a member of Pi Alpha Theta, the national history honors society as well as a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the honors society for government. I have been involved in tutoring since high school and have been doing it professionally for 5 years. My specialties include test preparation (SAT/ACT), history, government, English, writing, and grammar, amongst others.
I was professionally trained in SAT prep by The Princeton Review. Hundreds of my students have improved their scores dramatically and have received acceptance letters into the colleges of their choice. Across Math, Reading Comprehension, and Grammar, my students averaged a 350 point improvement within a period as short as 6 weeks. I specialize in showing students not just what the correct answer is, but WHY the answer is correct so that the student can more easily generate a correct response come test time. Any tutor on this site can show your child the correct answer; far fewer can aptly explain the reasoning behind it.
I received a 5 on the US History, Chemistry, US Government, Comparative Government, and World History. As a tutor I have helped clients in these subjects as well as the English APs. All of my students improved their scores during their time working with me and many received the perfect score. In humanities related subjects, the ability to think critically trumps the ability to memorize facts; memorization only helps if that particular question appears on the actual test, whereas if one can think critically, the ability to deduce the answer will come naturally. We lucked out with Stephen! He started with our family for AP World; he helped my child make the necessary connections and really made history come alive because he is so passionate about it. In addition to the content, he was able to help her with the how's and why's of the AP test. I have since referred him out for chemistry (and my friend was VERY pleased) as well as geometry. We fully intend to use him for SAT prep in a few months and if any of my other kids need a tutor, Stephen is who we will call first, regardless of the subject. This is particularly helpful because he knows a lot about a lot so I don't have to keep switching tutors because of different subject needs. He is also good at working with different learning styles which is crucial in my household.
Stephen responds promptly, is flexible and will meet you where it is most convenient for you; this style took the stress of organizing the tutor session away which made things go much smoother for all.
I met with Stephen to prepare for the Praxis test. After just one session, I feel much better about it! He thoroughly answered my questions and gave me great advice on how to continue studying. He is extremely knowledgeable and professional.
He was great for my son and did a great job, highly recommended, would use him again, always on time and my son did better on his tests.
This was the last session to prep my son to re-take the SAT. I spoke to him after the lesson and he feels Stephen has help him a lot. He feels confident that he will do a lot better on the SAT next weekend.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have read tens of thousands of pages on the subjects of the ancient world. I have tutored Rome, Greece, Byzantium, Ancient Egypt extensively. I received a Minor in Classical Civilization from William and Mary.
I received a 192/200 on the PRAXIS I exam and a 200/200 on the PRAXIS II Subject test. I graduated from the College of William and Mary in 2006 with a BA in History and minors in Political Science and Classics.
