About Kathleen

I have a BA from Maryville College in English literature and a master's in education. I have experience working in special education as a teaching assistant, tutor and mentor. I taught English and business communication courses for two private colleges. While I worked on my undergraduate degree, I researched and developed a thesis paper consisting of over 135 pages and 20 sources. I have experience with MLA, APA and Turabian formatting. Moreover, I have tutored and edited papers for students at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Maryville College is renowned for the intense course work, and the standard for writing is very high. As an English major, I was required to write several in-depth papers analyzing pieces of literature, peer reviewed journal articles, and poetry.

I enjoy playing chess, cooking, hiking and crocheting. I am fluent in American Sign Language and currently taking Mandarin lessons.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I have worked with adult students, both traditional and non-traditional with career development for the past five years. My experience is with both technical and traditional college students. This included resume writing workshops, interviewing skills, transfer pathways to career or continuing education, adults in re-entry, and military veterans.

Chess

I am currently rated at 966 as a chess player on Chess.com. I have played against opponents with ratings as high as 1400. Although I am new to Chess, and can teach very basic chess moves, I can also teach some strong openings and strategic moves for intermediate players based on my experience playing stronger players.

Sign Language

I am fluent in American Sign Language. I have been an Educational Interpreter for several colleges, and worked in special education with Deaf/hard-of-hearing students from fourth grade to sixth grade as an interpreter/tutor. I am currently under contract with a local college as an Educational Interpreter for Deaf/Hard-of-hearing students and an Academic Coach for students with disabilities.

Special Needs

As a special education para-professional in the public schools I have experience working with children who are either physically or mentally challenged. I have worked closely with children with cerebral palsy, ADD/HD and other types of impairments. My background also includes teaching children with speech and language related problems, as well as students with Autism, emotional disturbances, behavioral problems and anxiety disorders. I currently work as an Academic Coach with students with disabilities at the post-secondary level. I have a master's in education.

Study Skills

I have a master's degree in education with a concentration in adult learning. Currently, I work as an academic coach with students enrolled in engineering programs. I hold workshops on effective study skills, time management, and stress management. I have been in education in various roles for the past 15 years. I also have a great degree of experience developing lessons to accommodate student's learning styles.
