I am from the Knoxville area, but I moved away for twenty years when I married my husband, who was an officer in the Marine Corps. I have had the opportunity to live overseas as well as in many states across the country over the past twenty years. During that time, I taught high school English and worked as a columnist for local newspapers. My husband and I moved back to Knoxville with our two sons two years ago. I currently write an occasional column for the local newspaper in Knoxville, and I am working on a novel.
I enjoy teaching English, and I am interested in tutoring because I love the idea of helping students become proficient in skills they will need and use the rest of their lives. I earned a 3.87 GPA in college, and I have several years' experience as a teacher and a writer. I have excellent proofreading and grammar skills, and I have edited books, fliers, and pamphlets for churches and schools. As a tutor, I will work hard to ensure my students learn necessary skills by first helping them develop an understanding about the importance of proper English skills in all facets of their lives and then providing them with the tools necessary to succeed. Pamela did a great job connecting with our son. He had fun and also learned. The first lesson was about how to write a persuasive essay. She taught about what a thesis statement is. She helped our son brainstorm supporting ideas for the thesis statement. My son was left with a handout and specific instructions so that he could begin the outline for homework. Our son is very excited that Pamela is coming for another lesson tomorrow! We highly recommend Pamela for other families!
We studied some grammar and then practiced small talk. She asked some questions and I answered them.
Next time we will study some vocab.
Pamela was great. She quickly assessed the problems my son was having and began working with him in these areas. She put both him and myself at ease immediately which made it possible for him to open up and want to try his best for her. She suggested things for him to work on before she came back and he was eager to begin.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Maryland, and I have taught high school English. I also taught kindergarten at a private school in Japan, where some of my students spoke English as a second language. I have successfully helped students learn to speak English as a second language.
