About Amanda

My goal as a tutor is to do more than improve on a single topic but rather teach the student better methods and study habits so they can succeed in every subject throughout their academic career. Every student learns differently; therefore, I focus on both strengths and weaknesses to improve study habits, problem-solving, and organization. I believe in working toward an end result where the student no longer needs my help because we have established the academic tools they need to succeed on their own.

I recently received a B.S. degree in Chemistry with a minor in Mathematics from the University of Tennessee. Currently, I am working on a graduate degree in Computer Sciences and continuing research in Physical Chemistry. Previously, attended the U.S. Naval Academy where I studied English. I have taken extensive mathematics, English, and science courses along with training in learning skills and practical problem solving. Previously I acted as a tutor for fellow students at the Naval Academy, UTK, and Pellissippi State. My extracurricular activities have included numerous debate teams, academic bowl teams, participation in Model United Nations, American Chemical Society, and Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. I've received numerous awards in math, English, physics, and public speaking. I love to read, paint, swim, and backpack when I have free time because I believe that it is the well-rounded individual who has the best chance at success.

Katie I am so sorry if we did not cover all the items you wanted! If my manner came across as 'pushy' I am deeply sorry and I greatly appreciate you taking the time to give me feedback.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

Chemistry is a subject I am passionate about and love to share with others. I hold a B.S. in Chemistry and am currently conducting research through UTK in the field of Physical Chemistry while pursuing a graduate degree. As a tutor I have extensive experience ranging from high school chemistry through honors organic chemistry. I fully understand that chemistry is not where everyone naturally excels which is why I approach each student as an individual.

Computer Science

I am currently pursuing a Masters of Science in Computer Science with a focus in Data Science and Cloud Computing. Along with basic computer science courses I have completed graduate level coursework in Object-Oriented Programing, Software Engineering, Enterprise Web-Development, Data Science, Computer Architecture, and Algorithms. Experience with programming languages C++, Java, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, SQL, and Python.

Differential Equations

I am currently minoring in math. I have taken this course and passed with high scores, as well as Calc 1, 2, and 3 which are the building blocks for this subject. This logic based math class is about how you learn and ensuring it is explained in a manner that utilizes that specific learning style.

Public Speaking

At the age of 11 I started participating in public speaking competitions where I consistently won the highest awards in my age group. During high school I took courses in leadership and public speaking, participated in mock trials, was valedictorian and speaker at my graduation.
In college I have been an active member of my policy debate team, model united nations, and other such groups. I have given a number of presentations to my peers as well as sat before Senator interview panels and military promotion boards. I have given demonstrations and helped educate my peers in public speaking while in attendance at the U.S. Naval Academy and I can help anyone who suffers from glossophobia (fear of public speaking) as I have given lectures to my peer groups on the subject.

Study Skills

Learning and studying are two very different things. A person can easily learn something but if they never find the discipline or desire to attempt they will never gain that knowledge. Through out my high school, naval and college career I have worked with students, taken study skills courses and participated in numerous learning type course. I have found that there is a process to designing a study method that optimizes learning for each individual and I can work with a student to better establish it.
