About Neil

Neil B. started down the path of an artist and musician early on, playing saxophone, piano, and guitar for more than 20 years and entering local and school art and music competitions. He continued that path as a fine arts major (with a music minor) at ETSU, where he established relationships with several local artists and musicians, collaborating and performing in the area as a professional musician and volunteer, including his own jazz combo who performs locally for private parties, corporate events, and galas. Neil continues to further his education, studying with renowned Philadelphia-based jazz guitarist -- Jimmy Bruno.

Neil spent two years early in his career being apprenticed by a certified PPFA/Framers Guild member learning the trade of Custom Picture Framing. He then continued 10 more years as the Framing Department manager of a specialty gallery in the East Tennessee Smokey Mountains, having several of his own exhibits throughout the area.

In addition to his musical and artistic endeavors, Neil is a retail and internet marketing consultant, with several clients in the music industry. He is also a talented and accomplished artist whose work can be seen in lobbies of local business and homes.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have been playing & writing music for over 20 years. I teach theory & chord progressions to all of my students. I then show them how to connect chords, and add new ones. Then I begin them on the journey of improvisation. I also help them with song structure & form (AABA, etc), and how to include instrumental or vocal melodies with it. I minored in music performance at ETSU.

General Music

I have been playing music for over 20 years. Guitar is my primary instrument, but I have a good deal of experience with bass, piano, saxophone, and blues harmonica.
I have been teaching privately for over 10 years. I minored in music performance at ETSU.
I incorporate basic theory & introduce music history to all my students. I also explain the differences between different genres & styles of music.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for over 20 years, and teaching privately for more than 10 years. I minored in music performance at ETSU, and continue to study guitar with renowned jazz guitarist, Jimmy Bruno.
I have worked with several different curricula (Mel Bay, Berlee, Mickey Baker), but I have found the Alfred guitar method combined with personal experience & techniques to be the most effective. I also like to incorporate basic music theory, introduce music history, common chord progressions, and improvisation to all my students.
I am primarily a jazz guitarist, but have experience in several genres including classical, folk, electric & acoustic blues, and modern/rock.
