About Rachel

Having had a learning disability (ADD) from a young age which required I be in special education classes till 8th grade and get tutoring on and off throughout high school and college for my more difficult subjects (math and science), I deeply understand the importance and impact an excellent tutor can have on not only a student’s immediate grades, but on their overall confidence, self-esteem, approach to learning, and trajectory in life.

During college, I became committed to learning the best strategies to overcome my own learning difficulties and learned the best tips and habits for working with teachers and tutors to keep up with, and eventually overtake, my peers. Two subjects I excelled in despite my difficulties were writing and communication in which I earned straight A's throughout high school and college. I developed a still growing passion for helping others improve their own craft through tutoring my peers and motivating them by sharing the far reaching applications and potential for creating unlimited personal and professional growth in any field by harnessing the power of one’s own writing and public speaking skills! I saw the power of my own excellent essay writing and public speaking skills first hand when I was accepted into the 2012 Teach for America Corps, one on the most competitive programs in the country, at the end of my senior year.

In the 4 years since, I have personally taught and tutored over 150 students ranging from 4th grade through senior in college in the subjects of writing, grammar, and public speaking. In 2014, I was selected as one of only 20 nominees from Mississippi for the National Sue Lehman Excellence in Teaching Award, and in 2015, helped tutor a close friend with her writing as she went through the process of applying to be a Peace Corps volunteer culminating in her acceptance into the program at the end of last year. For the last two years I have been an active member in an international speaking club, Toast Masters, where I have given over 16 speeches, won several local speaking competitions, mentored new speakers, and went on to found and become president of a new club.

I am currently pursuing my Life Coaching Certification and truly love working with learners of all ages! I hope to not only improve the grades of my students by meeting them where they are at and developing individualized tutoring sessions that will get them where they want to be, but I also seek to help encourage, stretch, and empower my students to have the confidence that they can accomplish whatever they set their minds to.

I have 2 years of experience teaching Common Core English Language Arts, Reading, and History with 4th graders and tutoring 4th -6th graders after school in the same subjects.

I enjoy helping students from 3rd grade - college level with particular assignments or writing/speaking projects with a set due date. I love helping students study for state exams like TCAP for grammar, reading, and writing, and I also specialize in remediation as I worked with students with IEP's my second year of teaching, and I can craft lessons to teach specific skills or objectives, if given at least 48 hours of notice.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I taught Common Core Reading, Writing, and Grammar for 2 years as a 4th grade teacher and tutored 4-6th graders in the same subjects. My fourth grade class had the highest ELA scores on the end of year Common Core assessments both years and I raised ELA Quality of Distribution Index 60% at end of 2013 year (second highest ELA score out of 20 ELA teachers grades 3-6th). Also, I did IEP remediation and tracking of growth on specific objectives for all of my students who were low scoring in order to target low scoring areas and help them raise their scores. I held evening and weekend tutoring sessions for 4th graders on test packet prep.

Public Speaking

I got straight A's in my public speaking classes in college, and I was a recruiter for a company in college which required giving short presentations to students of 10 or more multiple times a week. I have been an active member in Toastmasters Speaking club for two years and completed requirements to receive my Competent Communicator Award (internationally recognized award for completing 10+ speeches in front of a live audience) and am working on my advanced speaking manuals (currently give 16+ speeches just in last 2 years alone, and I also help mentor and coach new members on their first speeches. Founded a new Toastmasters club and am standing president which means I get up and lead each meeting (we have 30 members). I have won best speech at each meeting I have given speeches at and also moved on the the city level competition for public speaking both years.
