About Shane

I am currently an art and design professor at a local college. I have taught a variety of courses within the disciplines of graphic design, photography and drawing for 18 years. I have in-depth knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. I have taught in a variety of colleges and universities, including Nashville State Community College, Lipscomb University, a couple of universities in the western United States. I taught for a semester in Florence, Italy as an ESL instructor in 2013 while I was also a drawing teacher. I have consistently positive student reviews. I have a good sense of humor and, while I take teaching very seriously, I am quick to share a laugh with students.

I took an intensive TOEFL course and taught ESL in Florence, Italy for a semester in 2013. Many of my students had little exposure to English prior to their immersion in my classes. It was rewarding, I think, for them and for me as well.

I am available largely after 5pm. I will maintain some flexibility even as I am committed to tutoring increasingly more students. I am also available on weekends. Please contact me ASAP for best availability. I look forward to helping you learn more about your desired topic.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have taught drawing to university art and design students for 18 years. I have a Master of Fine Arts degree in drawing. I believe that drawing is the basis for all works of art, including sculpture and graphic design—along with the obvious painting, printmaking and other 2-dimensional forms of making art.

Graphic Design

I have taught graphic design to university art and design students for 18 years. I became a graphic design 24 years ago following an undergraduate program of study while in university. I worked my way up to Art Director, Creative Director and, ultimately, began freelancing. I continue to freelance today while I am also the Chair of the Graphic Design Department at O'More College of Design in Franklin, TN.

Photography

I have taught photography to university art and design students for 14 years. I have a Master of Fine Arts degree in drawing, with a secondary field of study in photography. I believe that teaching composition and technique is the pathway to becoming a good photographer. It is NOT about the equipment or "gear" that one uses, but in honing one's ability to see compositions in everyday environments and situations.
