Belmont University - Nashville (MEd)
I love children! I am the mother of 3 children, grandmother of 2 children with another on the way, and I am called Mama by several "adopted" adult children in the Dominican Republic. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Belmont University in Elementary and Special Education. I taught Special Ed Grades 4-6 in Moore County at Lynchburg Elementary School. It was in Lynchburg that I met my husband. After marrying, we moved back to Nashville. I taught preschool 3-year olds part-time for a few years.
I had my 2 oldest children, and decided to return to school to pursue a Masters Degree. With a supportive husband caring for 2 small children on the weekends to enable me to study and write my thesis, I began the arduous process of completing another degree. I graduated with a 4.0 average from Belmont with a M.Ed in Early Childhood Education. I returned to the preschool classroom setting as a teacher for several more years. The last 4 years of teaching I was also the director of the program, overseeing several teachers, handling issues with parents, serving as a liaison between the program and the church, and teaching my own students.
Just before getting pregnant with my 3rd child, I resigned my teaching position to be a full-time Mom. However, over the course of many years I have also taught children, youth and adults in Sunday School, choir and discipleship training. I directed Vacation Bible School for a couple of summers. I also taught private piano lessons in my home for several years.
I the past ten years I have served on short term mission trips to the Dominican Republic, working in both construction projects and Vacation Bible School. My husband and I became financial supporters of some of the missionaries we work with, both Dominican and Haitian, who coined the name "Mama" for me. This past summer I also led a mission team to Uganda, Africa with H.E.A.L. Ministries, a 501(c)3 that my husband and I serve on the Board of Directors.
I love to learn (I currently take weekly watercolor color classes), and I love to help others learn. I lead a ladies weekly ladies Bible study in my home, as well as a couples Bible study bi-weekly.
I look forward to serving children in the education process through tutoring. I love children! I will offer a $5/hour discount for students who come to my home for tutoring.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been a Bible Study teacher over the past 40 years in the Baptist, Presbyterian and non-denominational churches. I have taught from preschool age through adults, including the 2 adult studies I currently teach: one for women, and the other for couples.
My undergraduate degree is in Elementary (K-6) and Special Education. I have a M.Ed in Early Childhood Education.
I have been an artist, working in various mediums, for many years. As a child I took art classes. Many years ago I took Tole Painting Classes. For the past almost 10 years I have taken Watercolor Painting classes, which I currently am enrolled in. I also love to Scrapbook and do a variety of arts and crafts.
I took private piano lessons while in elementary school. I then attended Blair School of Music in the Vanderbilt area, where I continued to pursue piano and piano theory. I have also taught private students in my home over the years. I served as church pianist for 10+ years.
Having an undergraduate degree in Special Ed. and being passionate about children with special needs, this is an area I very much desire to work in.
