About Rebecca

I love teaching science because I absolutely love science, especially biology. I think it's the coolest thing ever, and if you asked my students they would say my enthusiasm is contagious! I try to make learning it fun by engaging a student's natural curiosity. Science is all around us, and I teach by relating abstract concepts to things we can experience every day. I will work with your child in her own learning style to help her reach maximum potential.

I have tutored students at the high school, college, and graduate levels. As a high school biology teacher and a biological research scientist I have both a broad and deep understanding of science content and process as well as teaching training. It is one thing to understand, but an entirely different thing to be able to make someone else understand, and I am able to do both.

I have six years of experience in biomedical research at Bucknell, Johns Hopkins Medical Institute, and Vanderbilt. Through conducting research, I have developed strong critical thinking skills and the ability for creative problem solving. Biology is not just about learning facts but about learning how to think independently and ask questions.

In addition to my research experience, I am a licensed teacher in biology and chemistry and I have taught AP biology and honors biology for the last 3 years Summit High School. As the AP biology teacher, I helped my students achieve the highest pass rate and highest percentage of 4's and 5's in the county. My students also had above average growth on the TN State Biology End of Course exam.

I have a Master's of Science degree in biological sciences from Vanderbilt University and a bachelor's of science in cell biology/biochemistry from Bucknell University. I have six years of experience as a college teaching assistant for biology lab classes where I had a proven track record of helping my students succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I taught an ACT prep class math and science sections for two years at Summit High School. I am a licensed teacher in 6-12 biology and chemistry, and I can help you both with testing strategies and the math content.

ACT Science

I taught the ACT prep class math and science sections for two years at Summit High School. I can help you develop your own personal strategy to maximize your time and attack those science passages. The ACT science section is an exercise in reading and analyzing text and figures very quickly so time management and efficiency can be key. I am a licensed teacher in biology and chemistry 6-12.

Biochemistry

I absolutely love biochemistry! It is one of my favorite areas of science and I would love to help you with it. We can work on your problem sets and I can break down any concepts you are struggling with.
I am a certified teacher in biology and chemistry and I taught AP and honors biology for the last 3 years. I also have experience tutoring and teaching at the college level.
I was a cell biology/biochemistry major and I have a master's degree in biology from Vanderbilt. My undergraduate coursework focused specifically on biochemistry, and it is a passion of mine.
I have also worked as a biomedical researcher at Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, and Bucknell University for a total of six years. I have an intimate understanding of biochemistry concepts as well as the techniques used in the study of biochemistry.

Biology

I absolutely love biology and getting to share it with others is such a great joy. I can work with you to help you learn the concepts in the way that you like to learn. Biology is all about making connections between ideas, and that's where a lot of students tend to struggle, but I have strategies that can address that.
I am a licensed biology teacher and former research biologist. I have taught freshman biology honors (last year I had the highest growth in my department) and AP biology (last year I had the highest pass rate in my county).
I was a cell biology/biochemistry major and I have a Master's degree in biological sciences from Vanderbilt University. As part of my course work I have taken classes in topics in every area of Biology. I have worked as a biomedical researcher at Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, and Bucknell University for a total of six years. I have an intimate understanding of biology concepts as well as the techniques used in the study of biology.

Genetics

I would love to help you with your genetics problem sets and help you break down concepts you are struggling with.
I am an experienced tutor and teacher at both the college and high school levels. I was a teaching assistant at Vanderbilt and Bucknell for eight semesters and I am a licensed teacher in biology and chemistry 6-12.
I have a Master's degree in biological sciences from Vanderbilt University and a Bachelor of Science in cell biology/biochemistry from Bucknell University. As part of my course work I have taken classes in topics in every area of Biology. Microsoft Excel

Excel is one of my favorite programs. I use it extensively to track all kinds of student data, personal finances, etc. I can help you get the most out of it by showing you the basics, or if you're more advanced, shortcuts and tips.

Microsoft PowerPoint

As a high school teacher, I use PowerPoint extensively in my classroom. I know how to make an engaging presentation and take advantage of all the advanced features PowerPoint has to offer. I can show you how to manage slide transitions, animations, slide timings, text, tables, images and more. I've also used it to record my lectures on days that I couldn't be in class. This is an easy to use and under utilized tool, and I can help you take advantage of it.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word often frustrates beginner and even advanced users. It often seems like it has a mind of its own and formatting can be a nightmare. I have used Word for many different applications and I can help you control it instead of it controlling you. I can show you things like changing default settings, using breaks to define sections with different formatting, and many other things you didn't even know Word could do.

Needlework

I have been doing counted cross stitch embroidery for about 20 years. I also taught myself how to crochet and I make everything from hats and mittens to amigurumis (crocheted stuffed animals). I can teach you both basic and advanced stitches, give you tips on counting stitches and rows, and teach you to read several different types of crochet patterns. I also have knowledge of different types of yarns.

Praxis

I am a certified teacher in TN, 7-12 biology and chemistry. I was in the top 15% of test takers for the biology content knowledge praxis and scored very well on the chemistry and principles of learning and teaching (PLT). I also have experience tutoring test taking strategies for many standardized tests.

Very friendly and knowledgeable!

Rebecca was very friendly and helped me with genetics problems. When I tried to do the problems on my own they were very intimidating and I felt as though they were super hard. But when working on them with Rebecca, they didn't seem as bad. She broke down the problems into smaller steps and helped me understand concepts necessary to solve the problems. Also she was super friendly and took the time
