I really enjoy linguistics and how they affect our English language. One of the biggest influences on English has been and continues to be French. I love the French language and culture and love to share that passion with students of all ages, from young children to adults. I am also passionate about teaching others to express themselves in writing in our own language and how to build a good vocabulary which will help them in school and in their work.
I taught both French and English in Williamson Co. and Nashville, Tennessee, for over 30 years.
I am state-certified in ESL and have really enjoyed sharing our American culture and quirky English language with newcomers to our country.
In addition, I use my skills in teaching English to help students greatly improve their test scores on the English and reading sections of the ACT and SAT. Lynn has in-depth knowledge in French. She is patient, kind and clearly explain the concepts. Our son is very happy getting lessons from her.
She listened to me, helped me understand how I best learn and boosted my self confidence - sometimes you need someone that knows (other than your parents), to tell you that you have what it takes to do this! Lynn helped with basic skills to help me improve upon my score and I look forward to our next lesson.
Had our first session with Lynn and feel more prepared already. She is knowledgeable and was able to explain things in a way that made sense. Lynn's strategies are sure to help me improve my ACT score and I look forward to continuing our sessions. Thank you Lynn!
My son had a very good first session with Lynn. She was very knowledgeable, patient and encouraging with him. We were both very pleased!
Lynn has truly been a God send for my daughter. She is very patient and very knowledgeable in the area of English and Reading. Her knowledge of how and why test makers asks the questions they do has really impressed me!
Lynn has been amazing with my daughter! My very shy daughter is very comfortable with Lynn and feels free to ask questions and take instruction. Lynn is VERY knowledgeable with the French language and has a great way of explaining the work.
And most of all, after just a couple of weeks, my daughter's confidence and grades are increasing rapidly!
I have been impressed with Lynn and her tutoring style. I am trying to learn French for an upcoming vacation and subsequent business trip. Lynn has been professional and accommodating to my busy schedule. Much appreciated!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Success on the ACT test in general relies primarily on strategies and being very familiar with the types of questions asked consistently. Time is the enemy on the ACT, and I offer ways to shave off precious seconds and minutes.
For the English test in particular, I show the students the picky grammar questions which will definitely be asked at least once and help them recognize them readily and be secure in the knowledge that the students can answer those confidently.
We all know that reading comprehension is the key to success in any subject and in any standardized test. ACT Reading is particularly tough, but there are tips and strategies which can certainly increase overall scores through success on the Reading section. Reading is equally important on the English and Science sections of the ACT.
My Master's degree is in English Education from Vanderbilt University so I enjoy teaching all aspects of the English language: reading comprehension, vocabulary, composition, and grammar. The English language has a lot of irregularities and can be very confusing, so I try to find concrete rules and formulas which a student can use to be classified as proficient.
I have four courses in ESOL through Tennessee State University and passed the Praxis exam, which enables me to be certified through Metro Nashville Public Schools. I have had experience in teaching an adult ESOL class (intermediate level) through the Williamson County Adult Education program.
I have taught levels 1 - 5 AP French for over 30 years.
English grammar can be very arbitrary and quirky. Having a strong background in French, which used to be very closely aligned with English in days of old, has really helped me to better understand the origins and current applications of English grammar and to be able to explain it in a simple, easy-to-grasp manner.
My Master's degree is in English Education, and I was a classroom teacher for over 30 years.
I have had very good results tutoring the ACT and SAT, and the ISEE test is very similar in concepts and format, only simpler. I am currently tutoring a student in ISEE prep and have gotten very good reviews.
The PSAT and the SAT are used to qualify National Merit semi-finalists and finalists. These scholarships can ensure acceptance into top colleges and greatly reduced or free tuition. My MS in English Education, many years of teaching English, and experience in tutoring for both the ACT and the SAT have prepared me to help students make high scores on the Verbal and Writing sections of the PSAT and the SAT. I do not tutor the Math section, however.
I am state certified in ESL and have a lot of experience in teaching English--both to native and non-native speakers of English. I have also tutored students in preparation for TOEFL with successful results.
I enjoy teaching writing to those who find it scary and overwhelming. I work on all sorts of writing skill, including grammar, structure, thesis, development, organization, etc. Students I've tutored in writing have been successful once they catch on to the system and practice, practice, practice!
