About LeighAnn

I am a recent graduate from Southeast Missouri State University where I received a B.S. in Physics with emphasis in Astronomy and a Minor in Mathematics. I am interested in medical, atmospheric, and planetary sciences, as well as astrophysics. I would eventually like to go on to graduate school to obtain a PhD. in one of these fields.

As a lab assistant and grader at Southeast Missouri University, I assisted in Physical Concepts labs and graded labs. I also graded homework for Introduction to Engineering Physics and Introduction to Physics I and II.

I am also the mother of four school aged kids who I help with homework nightly.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Cooking

I feed 7 people every night. Each night I cook healthy meals from scratch. I learned to cook from my mother and had a cooking class in high school. I have taught my boyfriend to cook. His previous experience in the kitchen was limited to making sandwiches. Many of our meals include somewhat exotic or international dishes such as couscous, Caribbean salad, quinoa, risotto, or sushi, just to name a few.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have over 8 years of tutoring experience with students in kindergarten through college. I seek to create personalized lessons for each student, with focus areas including Mathematics, Science, Reading Comprehension, Language Arts, Writing skills and Study skills. I have tutored general education students as well as individuals with learning challenges, including autism and ADD.

I have tutored elementary students in math, science and reading. These students had an increased understanding in the subjects we covered together, which was reflected in better test grades and shorter amounts of time to complete homework.

With my guidance, three out of four of my children have complete k-6 grades (the fourth one is currently in second grade), two of them with straight A's since kindergarten.

Because my second grader missed the deadline for school by two days (his birthday), I decided to home school him until he was old enough to start public school. We started math and reading at a very young age, and because of that he has tested in the 91st percentile in math and 80th percentile in reading on a national level. He is reading at a sixth grade level. He has most of his multiplication and division facts memorized already, when the class hasn't even begun going over them yet. We also work on high school algebra three days a week, which he absolutely loves and can't get enough of!

We have math night three days a week, where all of the kids gather around the table and I teach them algebra. All four of the kids are excelling at the algebra and are constantly ready for newer, harder material.

Needlework

I taught myself to crochet when I was about 8, so I've been doing it for quite some time now. I have taught my children to do simple stitches. I also take orders and sell my creations.

LeighAnn is very conversant with mathematics, and a very kind and patient person.

LeighAnn helped my son with Algebra 1. She jumped easily into the topic he was working on. During their session he kept making commentary about how he "gets it now" and "wow it makes sense." She is a perfect tutor and great with connecting with her students.
