About Joel

My name is Joel G. I have an English degree from the University of Memphis with a focus in creative writing. I have always had a passion for teaching and I love helping others succeed and learn new things. I have been writing for years now, and I have one published book with another in the works. I have also spent some time teaching English to locals in Hermosillo, Mexico. I have some minimal experience with Spanish and Japanese but my main focus is in English grammar, spelling and writing.

On top of my college studies, I spent some time tutoring and helping elementary age students through an after school care program at the YMCA. Furthermore I have been involved with teaching youth at church. In my tutoring, I like to take a personal, hands-on approach. I believe close interaction with a student is essential in connecting in a way that will bring understanding and focus. I also feel this will help to better prepare a student for future success. I hope to have the opportunity to help you meet your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I attended a Christian school from kindergarten to high school graduation. I have worked within my church for over three years now. I have actively been researching and studying the Bible as well as familiarizing myself with different arguments and interpretations of the Scriptures.

English

I graduated from college with a bachelor's in English, specifically creative writing. All my classes focused on grammar, vocabulary and spelling, and paper-writing skills, and I have been writing for years now. I just complete my first full length novel; it is part one of a four part series, and I will be pursuing publishing very soon.

ESL/ESOL

I am an English major which helps dramatically when it comes to teaching another person English as their second language. I studied Spanish specifically in high school and went on to study at the honors level. I have visited Mexico twice now, and one of those times I stayed for two weeks speaking and interacting with the people of Hermosillo, Mexico; I also have friends who speak fluent Spanish and learn a great deal from them.

Grammar

I graduated from college with a bachelor's in English, specifically creative writing. I have been writing for many years now and thus I consider grammar a very important part of the English language. In my classes in college, we were required to write our papers with the correct grammar, and each year we were required to purchase a grammar book for our use in papers and stories.

Literature

I graduated from college with a bachelor's in English, specifically creative writing. All my classes focused on grammar, vocabulary and spelling, and paper-writing skills, and I have been writing for years now. Being an English major, we were required to read many books, and I am very experienced with Literature and reading.

Proofreading

I graduated from college with a bachelor's in English, specifically creative writing. I have spent a great amount of time proofreading my own works as I have written a full length novel, some short stories and written on my blog. It is important for me to proofread my work and edit as necessary so as to present a professional and intelligent work for others to read.

Reading

I graduated from college with a bachelor's in English, specifically creative writing. In college, my classes focused on Literature from old English and British Literature to American Literature. I have read many books for my high school and college courses and always did very well on tests and quizzes.

Vocabulary

Being an author, it is very important to me that I know a great deal of vocabulary. In my fiction writing, I like to focus most of my stories in medieval times. For authenticity's sake, I research appropriate vocabulary for that era and make sure to learn the true meanings of the words, both as they are used now and as they were used in past times. Furthermore, when I read I like to write down words I am unfamiliar with and define them using a dictionary so as to improve my own vocabulary.

Writing

I have been writing since my tenth grade year in high school, and I specialize in the fantasy-fiction genre of creative writing. I have written some material, mainly blogs, that consist of nonfiction writing as well. I have been writing for nearly eight years now, and I have spent the past eight months developing my first fiction book numbering more than three hundred and twenty pages and over one hundred forty thousand words.
