About Katherine

My name is Katherine Whatley, and I am a 2014 graduate of Tennessee Tech University. I majored in Human Ecology with an emphasis in Family and Consumer Science Education. I am a licensed teacher in the state of Tennessee and have experience with teaching children from 3 to 18 years of age. I have known I wanted to teach since I was in elementary school. To me, nothing is more satisfying than seeing that "Aha!" moment on a student's face and seeing their confidence in themselves grow.

I am currently employed with Putnam County Schools where I am filling a semester long Family and Consumer Science teaching position at Monterey High School. I have been teaching a total of two years. My strongest areas in academia include reading and language arts, grammar, writing, and test preparation. I have prior experience teaching subjects such as nutrition, psychology, and personal finance. I am very easy going and would love to help you or your child get caught up and get ahead!

I have always had a passion and a knack for English and Language Arts. Reading is something that came with ease for me at a young age. Ever since, I have loved literature and writing. Reading and English were both by highest scores on the ACT exam scoring a 29 in English and a 31 in Reading.

If you're needing any help at all, please don't hesitate to contact me! I love learning and teaching and would love to share that passion.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

Aside from growing up in the church and attending countless Bible studies as both a child and adult, I attended Lipscomb University my freshman year of college. At Lipscomb University, a Bible class is required every semester. I took The Story of Matthew and the Story of Acts while at Lipscomb. I have also led several Bible studies for both my youth group and now ladies ministry at church. I am experienced in teaching the Bible in both a spiritual and academic setting.

Cooking

I have a Bachelor's degree in Family and Consumer Science Education. A large focus area within my degree field is nutrition, food safety and sanitation, and basic culinary skills. To obtain my degree, I was required to take Food Preparation and Management, Quantity Foods, and Nutrition I & II. I am currently teaching a high school class called Nutrition Across the Lifespan where I lead the class in a cooking lab twice a week. Cooking is one of by biggest passions outside the classroom as well.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a teaching license for grades 5-12. I also have experience hosting after school care for elementary school students while I was in high school which consisted of homework help, tutoring, and educational activities. I have a mastery of teaching elementary level skills and curriculum.

Handwriting

Between teaching at a local Head Start and tutoring with the Special Education department while in high school, I have two years of experience teaching student's how to write and improve penmanship. I had the responsibility of teaching 20 four year old students the basic principles of writing and tasked with ensuring they mastered all 26 letters of the alphabet to be prepared for kindergarten. In high school, I was apart of the peer tutoring program where I helped students with special needs improve their penmanship.

Nutrition

I have a Bachelor's degree in Family and Consumer Science Education. A large portion of the coursework required with my major was Nutrition focused. I was required to take Nutrition I & II to graduate. I am currently teaching Nutrition Across the Lifespan which is a semester long class with 25 students. I will be starting Graduate courses in Nutrition and Dietetics in the Fall.

Praxis

As an Education major and now certified teacher, I have plenty of experience studying and preparing for Praxis exams. I passed the Principles of Learning and Teaching Praxis with a 173 and the Family and Consumer Science Praxis with a 181 when the cut off score was 154. I am currently studying to take the English Praxis for grades 7-12 in the Fall.

Sewing

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Family and Consumer Science Education with an emphasis in Textiles and Apparel. To obtain my degree, I was required to take Intro to Textiles and Apparel, Clothing and Construction, Flat Pattern Design and Construction, and Textiles I & II. I was also required to log an additional 50 hours in the sewing lab. I currently teach basic sewing skills to 60 high school students every semester.
