With 13 years of experience teaching a variety of subjects, I have assisted children with all types of learning requirements--whether they just need someone to help fill in the gaps, someone to explain new, advanced concepts, or someone to provide special learning services. I bring a caring attitude to each student and his or her family. I strive to carefully assess the student's knowledge and skill level, to help him/her develop an academic goal, and to prescribe the best solution for success. I feel it is very important to meet the student where he or she is in the learning process and to celebrate small victories along the way--giving them tools for lifelong learning.
I have a double major bachelor of arts degree from UTC in English and Communication. My focus in both majors was writing, although I have extensive experience in literature as well. As a full-time teacher, I am considered highly qualified by the State of Tennessee to teach reading and language arts K-12. I have also taught middle school mathematics, basic computer, and career education. Throughout my career, I have worked with children who have learning differences, autism, ADHD, and giftedness.
Prior to my education career, I worked for 12 years in corporate and commercial media, writing in a variety of styles, including magazine articles, brochures, video scripts, audio and video commercials, and broadcast television.
While my expertise is in English, literature, and writing, I also have experience teaching math through sixth grade, public speaking, and test prep (ACT, SAT, and GED).
I prefer that sessions be conducted at the Cleveland Bradley Public Library, but would consider other public sites as well. For Chattanooga or Dalton students, I have a 12-hour cancellation policy. For Cleveland students, six to eight hours is sufficient. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I currently teach English but have taught math in our computer labs for four years. I have a master's degree in education and have taught in public school system for 13 years.
