Bio

My name is Kim. I live in Cleveland, Tennessee. First, I would like to share a little about myself. I love to watch wildlife, especially birds, garden, read, kayak and bicycle and I always have an ongoing project of some type at home.

At this time of my life, I am preparing for retirement from teaching. However, I am not done with teaching because I love it so much. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education and a Master's of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. I am also certified...

I am also certified to teach English as a Second Language. I have extensive experience in teaching reading, phonics, mathematics, writing and grammar. I have worked with students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade.

My goals for my students are that they will reach their maximum potential in their areas of need, take pride in their accomplishments, and enjoy learning.

I am a strong teacher and my students show excellent progress because I am able to pinpoint their academic needs, develop teaching strategies that will work for each of them, identify their learning styles and motivate them to learn.

When it comes to tutoring, I would like to work with students in grades first through sixth in reading skills, literature, vocabulary and writing. I also like to work with students through eighth grade in the areas of reading and writing.

Elementary (K-6th)

It is truly a joy to work with elementary aged children. They are open to learning and extremely honest. These attributes give me the opportunity to help them to reach their highest potential. One strength I have in working with kindergarten through sixth grade is the ability to develop learning strategies that work for each child. When working with children, it is extremely important to understand and acknowledge their unique learning styles. After this is obtained, I utilize this knowledge to teach according to how the children learn. Another important aspect of teaching elementary students is to rely on those tried and true methods of teaching academics. In today's technological world, there are abundant resources to research based strategies that work. I am experienced and trained in many of these strategies.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I am presently a teacher with the Whitfield County School system. I have had much training and professional learning for instruction of elementary mathematics. I have learned several strategies to incorporate into my lessons to teach students in the way in which they each learn. Also, I will continue to obtain more professional learning with curriculum and instruction because it makes instruction fun and me a better teacher.
Phonics,

Phonics

Phonics is an area that can be very difficult to attain for some children. While others quickly catch on, some may not be so quick to develop these skills. However, one must learn phonics in order to read well. I have had much experience and success in teaching children phonics. In order to keep it interesting, I utilize a variety of teaching methods. In my tenure as an elementary special education teacher, I have used a variety of phonics programs such as Open Court, Recipe for Reading and so much more. Just this past year, I had an opportunity to teach phonics to students at a middle school level that were learning the English language. Even though they were older and we only worked together once a week, they enjoyed it and learned a great deal more than when they first entered into the program.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Study skills are of utmost importance in the area of academic success for any and all students. If one does not have good study skills, he or she will not be successful in school nor in a career. Study skills are best taught and learned most easily at a young age. The keys to good study skills are organization, knowledge of what needs to be done, making the right choices of what, how to study, and when to prepare for a particular test or project. Last, is using your time wisely. It sounds easy, but it is actually quite difficult. One must make a plan, set a time and place for homework, projects and studying. It is a matter of setting up a system and sticking to it. I can help you create a plan, become organized and then reap the success of having excellent study skills.

Thorough and Honest

My son had a good experience with Kim. She did an initial assessment with him and gave me a game plan for the next visit. My child's weaknesses are not necessarily academic, so Kim was able to confirm my own assessment and give honest feedback. She did not recommend continuing to tutor a child who didn't need it. I appreciated her honesty. Overall, a good experience and I would use Kim again, if needed.

Great tutor!

Kim’s years of experience are evident when teaching my child. She shows a great deal of interest and patience and clearly enjoys her profession. In a short time she has taken a very discouraged little boy who didn't want to pick up a book into an encouraged and confident child who is excited to read. Just today he told me “I am so glad I have a tutor because now I can read!” As a parent I am relieved and most grateful for the dedication she has shown to her profession.
