About Sarah

Hello! I am a certified public school teacher. How did that happen? I have long history of teaching all sorts of things to a variety of ages of people. I started tutoring young children in reading when I was in college. I taught in a small private school teaching music, recorder, piano, and Spanish. I worked as a volunteer coordinator for a homeless family shelter where I was responsible for creating a training program for volunteers (that's a different type of teaching). When my husband and I started out own family, we decided to home school our children; this is when I found I really loved being an educator and tutor. It was a fascinating and wonderful experience to watch my daughters unfold as human beings and students! Toward the end of the time my daughters were finishing high school, I decided I wanted to continue teaching and sharing with others what I'd learned about teaching, so I returned to graduate school to get my Masters in Secondary Education to teach English.

For the past three years I have taught English grammar, literature, vocabulary, and writing to 8th graders. Due to some life transitions, I would like to return to tutoring. I am highly qualified to teach English, and I believe that a student who has a functional command of the English language in all domains, as they say, being: reading, writing, speaking, and listening is equipped to learn anything he or she sets his or her mind to learn. Just for the record, I am pretty handy with math up through trigonometry, too! I look forward to meeting you and helping you love to learn!

Logic is the underpinning of thinking and reasoning. Language, math, and music are all related to one another in that understanding those subjects requires careful observation of details and how those details are linked together. If you aren't strong in math, sometimes you have to jump into math from things you already know or can do well.

To me, one of the most important parts of teaching is what I learn while doing it! Also, I've found that if I am interested, my students are interested. Interest is what makes you a life long learner. We live in a complex world that changes practically everyday: being adaptive and knowing how to learn new things is a very important 21st century skill. So, let's get learning!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

I'm certified for 7- 12, and have worked helping all ages of children to read. Also, I have worked extensively with special need students.
