About Brittany

Classical music is my passion, and my mission is to instill a love of music in the next generation. I strive to make learning an engaging and enjoyable experience.

My relevant experience includes tutoring aural skills and music theory privately. Combining elements of listening, writing and reading music, I design a unique curriculum to fit the needs of each student. I have taught private harp and piano lessons, through which I have gained experience evaluating skill levels, assigning appropriate learning goals, and teaching musicianship skills as well as technique, while encouraging a love of music. In addition to my experience as a private teacher, I have worked with students in the classroom setting as a Teacher’s Assistant at Manhattan School of Music’s Precollege Division and Sistema Utah. I have also worked as a teaching artist, presenting to large groups and tailoring programs to the age and interests of my audiences. These presentations linked musical concepts to other disciplines, including science and history. As an experienced performer of solo, chamber and orchestral music, I can work with students to help them improve their performance and collaboration abilities and improve their critical thinking and listening skills.

I believe that it is a teacher’s job to help students to teach themselves. I ask questions of my students to guide the development of their own musicianship, rather than expecting them to mimic my own musical opinions. I try to be sensitive to the needs of the students, and to find the needed balance between goal-oriented discipline and encouragement specific to each student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

My Bachelor's and Master's of Music degrees from Manhattan School of Music required that I take multiple courses specializing in ear training. I have tutored private students in ear training and created exercises to fit the needs of each student. I create exercises that help students master the different elements of music by isolating the elements, then combining the elements as the students progress.

General Music

As an experienced performer of solo, chamber and orchestral music, I can work with students to help them improve their performance and collaboration abilities and improve their critical thinking and listening skills. Through my studies at Manhattan School of Music, I have a broad knowledge of music history, world music and music theory. I have taught a variety of music-related subjects, including music theory, ear training, harp technique, music reading, and presentations on general music concepts that incorporate concepts of science and history.

Music History

I was required to take multiple courses specializing in music history. I have taken four semesters of core music history and six semesters of specialized music history courses. Through personal music study as a performer, I know how to interpret music using my knowledge of music history to create informed performances.

Music Theory

I studied Renaissance through 20th Century music theory at Manhattan School of Music. I frequently apply these skills to my instrumental practice and performance. I have tutored theory to private students in addition to teaching in a classroom setting.

Piano

I have been playing the piano for 10 years. I perform weekly on both the piano and the organ for my church. I studied the piano with DMA students at Manhattan School of Music. I have worked with students in the classroom setting as a Teacher’s Assistant at Manhattan School of Music’s Precollege Division.

Sight Singing

My degree programs required that I take multiple courses specializing in sight singing. I have tutored private students in ear training and created exercises to fit the needs of each student. I create exercises that help students master the different elements of music by isolating the elements, then combining the elements as the students progress.
