About Matty

Are you familiar with the words "drama," "psychology," and "auto"?
What about "alpha," "meta," or "phone"?

If so, you're already good at Greek! I'm here to take you from good to great!

My name is Mattie and I fell in love with the Greek language (I'm sure I would like Modern Greek too, but we're talking about Koine and Classical Greek - sometimes called biblical or New Testament Greek) years ago when my Greek professor told us his favorite phrase: "iteh kooneh" (it means 'Go Dogs!' He was a Georgia Football fan). It was that moment I realized that I didn't have to learn Greek how everyone else was learning it: by memorizing flash cards, reading ancient texts, etc.

The best way to learn Koine Greek, I personally believe, is to use it as a spoken language - and that's how I teach it! Sure we'll review some flash cards and phrases (You did that in Spanish class right?) but learning Greek with me will be fun, intentional, and most of all useful. You'll soon be able to read the NT Book of John or a passage from Plato with relative ease (without the use of your dictionary and grammar book beside you).

While studying in college, I took every Greek course my college offered (my professor even created an extra one for me to take!). I tutored my fellow classmates in levels below and above me weekly. I even created a study guide that spread like wildfire around the Greek language learners at my school (there weren't that many I guess, but you can be one of the lucky few to get a copy!).

Reading and using Greek has benefits outside your classroom. If you're learning for a better understanding of the Bible, there's no better way than by learning one of the the languages it was written in; if you're learning to better grasp your philosophy readings, there's no better method of quoting source texts than in the original language.

I'm as eager to learn more as you are. It's my goal that this learning experience be beneficial for both of us.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I attended both a private high school and college were semesterly Bible Study classes were required. Throughout high school and college I regularly taught and led Bible Studies through extra-curricular activities and during summer camps. Additionally, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies from Bryan College in 2013.

Greek

In addition to taking 4 years of Greek in college, I tutored 3 of those 4 years. As a Teaching Assistant I taught Elementery Greek to freshmen. As a Senior Teaching Assistant, I worked part-time as a tutor within the tutoring department and I assisted the professor of Greek in grading lessons and tests.

Hebrew

As the Teaching Assistant for the Biblical Languages Department at Bryan College, I offered weekly tutoring lessons in Hebrew. Additionally, in absence of the professor, I would lead the freshmen level Hebrew classes.

Proofreading

I served as a writing Consultant with Bryan College's Academic Support Center. I have worked as a high School Teacher (who required according to my students, "too many" essay questions on my tests). I've provided private writing tutoring, and I have appraised academic/admissions applications and essays.
