About Matty

The first word out of my mouth as child was 'why?' I never stop asking questions and seeking answers. While this mindset has developed into a love of learning, I like to think of it more as a lifestyle of learning. I've learned things throughout my life both inside and outside the classroom in various subjects. Knowing that we have more unknowns in our universe than known inspires me (and my students) to continually seek.

I've taught both middle school and high school (History, Religion, Philosophy). I've tutored at the collegiate level (Greek, Hebrew, Philosophy, Writing). I've taught for several years in outdoor education (Horseback Riding, Biking) and 'non-standard' educational experiences (I'm a Certified Barista Trainer too!). With the fundamental belief that learning is not limited to school, I'm able to bring a student's world into the learning experience.

Psychology and philosophy are my extra-curricular passions. I engage in writing workshops, podcasts, and deep reading of philosophical texts.

As the Teaching Assistant at Bryan College, I taught first-level Greek from 2 years. I tutored my peers in Koine Greek and Paleo-Hebrew for 3 years. I love languages and I chose to be bilingual in those that few others can.

I assisted a few high school seniors in increasing their ACT English and Writing scores by consistent after-school tutoring. ACT English and Writing is different than writing for other courses, and I believe I've found a few tricks along the way.

My greatest passion in teaching is being taught something new from those I teach. If the conventional teaching and tutoring methods have failed you, and you need to reignite your love of learning, I'd be honored to learn alongside you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I attended both a private high school and college were semesterly Bible Study classes were required. Throughout high school and college I regularly taught and led Bible Studies through extra-curricular activities and during summer camps. Additionally, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies from Bryan College in 2013.

Greek

In addition to taking 4 years of Greek in college, I tutored 3 of those 4 years. As a Teaching Assistant I taught Elementery Greek to freshmen. As a Senior Teaching Assistant, I worked part-time as a tutor within the tutoring department and I assisted the professor of Greek in grading lessons and tests.

Hebrew

As the Teaching Assistant for the Biblical Languages Department at Bryan College, I offered weekly tutoring lessons in Hebrew. Additionally, in absence of the professor, I would lead the freshmen level Hebrew classes.
