About Scott

I am a PhD student at Vanderbilt University pursuing a doctorate degree in computational water resource management. I am also a full time research hydrologist with the US. Geological Survey. I have a masters of science in hydrology (Vanderbilt University, 2014) and a bachelors of science in environmental sciences (GA college, 2012). I taught undergraduate students at Vanderbilt from 2012-2014 in both the classroom setting and in smaller groups during office hours.

I am passionate about cultivating a scientific way-of-thinking for students of all ages. Science and mathematics are both fundamentally rooted in the use of clear logic and sound reason. I am interested in tutoring because I think math and science skills offer the most opportunity for students entering the work force in the next decade. I also think our current education system fails to present math and science in a way that is accessible and exciting for students–I would like to see that change.

I have completed multiple classes in calculus, statistics, probability, machine learning, numerical modeling, and other various math-related classes. My daily research involves Bayesian inference, network theory, machine learning, and everything in between.

I have taught geology/physical sciences courses at the college level and have a passion for the philosophy of science.

Learning to think in a systematic, logical way applies to every discipline. Whether you choose to pursue physics or art history, learning how to think is the most important skill to develop!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Geology

I have a masters in hydrology from an earth and environmental science program, I have taught various geology courses, and I work for the US Geological Survey.
