About Maria

I am a certified special education teacher at a local high school. I have worked with students with many different disabilities including autism, ADD/ADHD, specific learning disabilities in math and reading, and OHI. I currently teach social and organizational skills to students with autism, and I teach math to students with a specific learning disability in math.

I love the process of learning. I love to see students 'get it' and be able to succeed on their own. I am very patient and have a lot of different ways for students to learn.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I earned a masters degree in special education from Grand Canyon University and have a Tennessee state certification in special education. I have worked closely with many students with ADD/ADHD. Organizational skills are one key component of learning - keeping binders organized, writing assignments in an agenda, breaking up assignments into manageable pieces, etc. I work closely with students in the beginning and then slowly fade my help until they begin to independently organize themselves. Other work with ADD/ADHD students includes setting up a proper work space, time management, empowering students to work with their teachers on focusing in class, and working with parents to teach time management at home.

Algebra 1

I am state certified in mathematics. I have experience teaching algebra and geometry in the classroom setting and one-on-one.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I earned a masters degree in special education from Grand Canyon University and have a Tennessee state certification in special education. I mainly work with autistic high school students. We work on skills to help them be successful in the classroom - listening skills, knowing when to take a break, answering questions, working in groups, getting organized, completing tasks, etc. Just as important though, we work on social skills to help these students find success in the classroom and in real life - how to carry on a conversation, how to use proper body language and hygiene techniques, how to control emotions, etc.

Very patient tutor for kids with ADHD!

After only a few weeks of PreAlgebra tutoring with Maria, our son's grades have already improved substantially! She can keep him engaged and focused on the Math lessons, and she is extremely patient with him. I would highly recommend Maria for Middle school age students who are struggling with their PreAlgebra and Algebra 1 concepts.
