My love for teaching English as a Second Language stems from my passion for building connections with international people, and seeing them advance their success in the U.S. and abroad. It also stems from my love for the English language and my ability to facilitate successful English language learning through effective teaching strategies. I have taught all four of my children to read and write before the age of four and continue to tutor them through high school in English writing, reading and public speaking. I am skilled at conveying material so that it is cohesive and understandable. I always provide a challenge while remaining in-tune with a student's unique pace, and I always assign homework.
My English expertise stems from my Juris Doctorate degree and my experience as a Public Relations Practitioner, both of which caused me to develop excellent writing, editing and public speaking skills. My Bachelors degree in Intercultural Human Communication provides me with a strong ability to communicate across cultures and language barriers. Most recently, I have gained experience in formal education as a teacher of literacy and character development for children from many varied nationalities and language backgrounds. For the past two years I have also served as a substitute teacher of children and teens with special needs. I also currently teach online English classes to beginner-level adult students in China.
I am excellent at breaking down the English Language, simplifying the rules and conveying them in a cohesive, logical flow which is both easy to understand and apply. I use creative methods for applying the learning to real-life contexts so that the learning becomes usable knowledge. I have a well-developed expertise in English reading, writing, editing and public speaking stemming from my Juris Doctorate degree, my experience as a Public Relations Practitioner and my research-based undergraduate studies in Intercultural Human Communication. I am energetic, enthusiastic and highly in-tune with my student's unique learning paces.
I am a substitute teacher of K-12 students in a Common Core school system, and the mother and primary tutor of four Preschool-High School children who are Common Core Students.
I have 15 years of experience teaching children to read and write using the phonics method, as well as 6 years experience teaching literacy to preschool through high school-aged students. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
