University of Virginia (Music)
Seattle Film Insitute (Master's)
Hey there. My name is Mike, and I'm a film composer currently living in Brentwood, TN, 15 minutes from the heart of Nashville. I received my BA in Music from the University of Virginia with a Minor in Psychology. Because my degree is a BA instead of a BM, I am very well rounded in music -- from history, to ethnomusicology, to theory, to conducting, etc. -- as opposed to my degree being narrowly focused on an instrument or certain field. I also have a Master of Music in Film Scoring from the Seattle Film Institute, taught by two-time Emmy Award winner Hummie Mann. This degree ensures that I know both the music- and the business-side of media, with a very, very heavy focus on music theory and software implementation.
I have experience tutoring a few people, mostly about recording engineering and software use, but a few have learned music theory from me as well. I love to teach, and it's a pleasure to see students learn and then implement what I have taught them into their own aspirations.
What makes me an outstanding music tutor? I have a Master of Music in Film Scoring, have played in many bands, am proficient in multiple instruments (music theory and piano helped), have scored for a feature film and two TV shows, and have been studying music since I was 7 years old.
If you would like to learn music theory, even theory beyond what high school courses offer -- believe me, I took them. Even collegiate theory courses. I thought I knew everything about music theory when I got to graduate school, where I was quickly shown that I was dead wrong -- then feel free to contact me. Thanks! Hey there. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I hold a Master of Music in Film Composition from the Seattle Film Institute and a BA in Music from the University of Virginia. Also, I have composed music for multiple projects, including a full length feature film that was nationally released.
I hold a Master of Music in Film Composition from the Seattle Film Institute and a BA in Music from the University of Virginia. While in these programs, I had to do multiple projects that included ear training and transposition. At the age of 20, while still at UVA, I was asked to professionally transcribe a vocal quartet piece by my teacher for one of his friends because I was the best in the class.
I have a Master of Music in Film Scoring, which ranged from film history, to theory, to software implementation, to orchestration and composing. I also have a BA in Music from the University of Virginia. Because it is a BA as opposed to a BM, I am well rounded in all aspects of music instead of being narrowly focused on one field, such as ethnomusicology or an instrument.
While earning my BA of Music at the University of Virginia, I was required to take music history courses. I studied Baroque, 19th century, and 20th century music history. I was proficient in all of them, and can submit a transcript upon request.
While at the Seattle Film Institute, I was required to learn Logic, Finale, Sibelius, Pro Tools, East West sample sets, Kontakt, and various other mixing and mastering tools. I have also been creating, mixing, and mastering my own tracks due to budget restraints on projects. If you require a transcript, I can easily send you one.
I write the music for movies and TV, and music theory is required in every single sequence.
I have been playing piano for almost 19 years. It is my main instrument, and I was taught by Jody Nardone, a well known pianist in the music industry in Nashville. Also, at the age of 19, I became a professional piano play, playing at multiple venues, multiple student plays, and in jazz ensembles at cocktail parties.
While self-taught on saxophone in high school, I quickly became one of the lead saxophonists in the Virginia Pep Band in 2007. I continued playing throughout the years, switching between tenor and alto saxophones, and was asked to play on several demos for various artists.
While at the Seattle Film Institute, I was taught songwriting by Sue Ennis, who worked closely with the band Heart. I have also written a few songs since graduate school. While I'm a film composer, I have intimate knowledge of how songs are supposed to be written. Recently, I worked on the string tracks to "Beside Me" by the Authorities, here in Nashville.
