About Joseph

Hello, my name is Joseph, and I'm a recent university graduate who specializes in communicating. I love to explore the way we talk. Every word, every structure, every intonation drips with meaning, and learning how to use that helps in every walk of life. Education loves to tell us, "This is useful no matter what you do," but communication is one of the disciplines where that's actually true because you have to talk to people no matter what you do.

But we're not all good at it. Talking is hard. It can be very hard to have the confidence to really say what you want to say either out loud or when putting pen to paper. Either when speaking to one person or speaking in front of a crowd. That's what I can tutor.

I've spent my education studying and working on the right way to talk to people. This includes how to write papers, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, proofreading, public speaking, discussion speaking, intercultural communication, and interpersonal communication. At the core of those practices are good grammar, structure, poise, and confidence. To give those concepts more concrete form, my English ACT score was a 32, I graduated from Nashville State Community College with an Associate's Degree in Visual Communication - Web Design, won the Consulate General's Award in the 7th Annual Tennessee Area Japanese Speech Contest, graduated with my Bachelors in Science with a strong focus in small group communication and public speaking, and have been volunteering as an ESL teacher with The Salvation Army.

I can teach two languages. I natively speak English and have ESL experience, so I can help with both specific English tutoring and conversational English practice. I've also studied Japanese and can tutor beginner to intermediate level. I'll be glad to tutor reading comprehension, speaking, conversation, writing for both personal and business situations, and any tests you may need to take.

Words are my specialty. Let me lend you a hand with yours.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have been teaching English as long as I have been in academia. I have edited papers, explained concepts, read books for fellow students, proofread, and taught grammar for anyone who asked. There is no level of English education I am unfamiliar with.

On a professional level, I have done personal English tutoring and taught English as a Second Language for The Salvation Army. Teaching ESL has given me a strong sense of the basics of English so that I can help anyone struggling with any concept.

ESL/ESOL

I have been participating in ESL teaching ever since I entered university to study Japanese. Our education involved a great deal of interaction with nationals who had come to the school to learn English, so I have a great amount of informal experience explaining the quirks of the English language to people who have little experience speaking it themselves. I have also participated in language exchange with people of other countries looking to learn English. I have written emails, done online chat, prepared audio materials for self-study, and taught formal lessons to my language exchange partners.

Formally, I have volunteered as an ESL teacher for The Salvation Army. I taught a hour and a half class to Hispanic students. I gave lessons from our curriculum as well as including practical experience through regular free conversation. My time there gave me both classroom experience and one-on-one tutoring experience.

Japanese

I started studying Japanese when I was 10 years old out of a pure love for the language. I continued that self study all the way through until college where I began studying the language formally. I found the pace slow at first, so I skipped a year of curriculum through self teaching, and was able to take the third year of classes with no issue.

During that time, I participated in the Tennessee Area Japanese Speech Contest. My speech for that year's contest won my division's Consulate General Award, a special prize awarded to participants who particularly impress the acting Consulate General of our Japanese consulate.

Post college, I spend my time teaching English to Japanese native speakers via language exchange to improve their English and my Japanese.

Reading

Both my Associates and Bachelors Degrees were focused on communication. To effectively understand how to speak to people, it is important to understand what they are saying. To that end, a great deal of my education involved analyzing texts whether they be books, articles, speeches, presentations, poetry, scientific papers, historical accounts, or any other manner of written expression.

To keep up with this aspect of my education, I regularly read these same forms of texts to analyze for meaning. This helps me to explain the messages and themes of both simple and complex works to students, to explain confusing prompts to my students when they are having trouble with papers, and to create those prompts myself when I am creating practice questions based on passages for my students.

Writing

Writing papers and presentations is my natural talent. In academia, I always excelled in essays, term papers, book reports, short answer questions, and anything else that involved writing and composition.

Informally, I edited the papers and reports of my peers and juniors throughout university. I would edit according to what they wanted done with the paper including content, syntax, spelling, suggestions for changes, and explaining prompts to anyone having trouble understanding what question was being asked.

Formally, my B.A. was focused on communications both written and spoken. I have experience writing speeches, presentations, and grant proposals as well as analyzing texts and articles for content.
