I am currently a doctoral student working on my dissertation in the School of Social Work at Howard University. I graduated with honors in both undergraduate and graduate studies earning a B.A. degree in History from the State University of New York, Purchase College and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Arizona State University. Prior to pursuing graduate studies, while raising my daughter, I held leadership positions of progressive responsibility as a human resources professional.
My fascination with history and research began in fifth grade when I attempted my first research project on the topic "Burial Practices of the Ancient Egyptians". My love of research and writing expanded during my studies at Purchase where I authored a senior thesis entitled "The AME Church During Reconstruction". As part of my doctoral studies I obtained training as an academic researcher and writer on a superior level. I have authored and presented papers on historical and contemporary aspects of the American experience to professional groups and at conferences in the U.S. I have taught "the psychology of human behavior in the social environment" at the graduate level. My areas of expertise include study skills; research, writing and editing (including college level); AP US and world history; and AP psychology.
I have educated and tutored high school and college students, as well as, professionals on a one to one and group basis for over ten years. My experience has taught me how to efficiently and accurately assess an individual's educational needs and learning style. My assessment begins with an initial information gathering and discussion with the student and parent(s). Importantly, on an on-going basis, I assess the educational process from various perspectives by soliciting feedback from the student and others as appropriate. This process allows adjustments to be made quickly in order to ensure the experience is as successful as possible for the student. My approach to the education process enables students to utilize their strengths while addressing identified areas for academic development. Incorporating homework assignments, with this tutoring approach, provides one of the frameworks I have successfully used for my work with students. My background in psychology and social work ensures I am mindful the student is an individual who possesses many facets which influence learning. I am available to meet at a mutually agreeable location. I request a 24 hour cancellation notice but will allow for make-up sessions.
Tutoring gives me the opportunity to utilize my skills and academic training while assisting others to perform at their full academic potential. I find my work with individuals very rewarding as I experience sharing my excitement and love of learning. I have received feedback from both students and parents that my tutoring expanded the student's appreciation for learning and increased his/her confidence in having the ability to succeed academically. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have coached individuals in career development for 6+ years utilizing the process and materials I developed based on best practices. In addition, for more than 10 years I facilitated interviewing skills training as a human resources professional in the public and private sectors. I have conduced research on life-span human development theory at the Ph.D level. I utilize my academic research of human development in designing career development tools, materials, and processes. My professional training in psychology enables me to take into account the many facets of an individual which may influence career choices. Examples of materials I developed include: Consultation Data Collection Form; Career Development Inventory Self- Assessment; and Career Development Analysis Report. I have also provided resume writing/critiquing and interview skills development. The fluidity of the job market requires that individuals are able to navigate across disciplines with success. This demands a focused short and long term career strategy. My vision is to help individuals identify, develop and implement realistic career goals to reach their career potential.
I have over 10 years diversified experience as an educator and tutor of students from K to graduate level. I am skilled in tutoring and teaching complex information and development of study skills. I have a proven track record in helping others reach their full academic potential. I graduated with honors in my undergraduate and master's level studies. As well, I have completed all required Ph.D level course work and exams, with a 3.8 GPA. I am currently completing my dissertation. I could not have attained my academic achievements without developing and applying advanced study skills. I use my study skill techniques to assist others in mastering various academic subjects. The students I have tutored advance to higher levels of academic performance. I love learning and inspire others to do so as well.
My exceptional writing skills are reflected in my academic honors and professional achievements which include my current Ph.D level studies. I have an extensive background as an educator and tutor.
