About James

Learning is a process and a journey. As a tutor, I enjoy helping people achieve their learning goals, and more importantly, I enjoy encouraging them along the way. I have two very memorable successes as a tutor and teacher: As a tutor for The Princeton Review, I had a student achieve a perfect score on the verbal portion of the scholastic achievement test. As an adjunct teacher, I worked with a student who had a learning disability. And after coordinating with my dean and consulting with the student's parents, I worked with the student and helped him pass the class and eventually graduate. Both inspiring moments but not because of me but the student's efforts using the skills, knowledge, and experience shared with them. Anyone can go to the beach and play in the sand, but it takes a desire, discipline, focus, and humility to build a sandcastle. And, when the waves of life come in, the rebuilding process starts over. Learning is like that as well. What we learn today has an expiration date so we need to be continuously learning. Tutoring inspires me to keep learning.

Being an outstanding anything is measured by the degree to which the subject has meaning to you. Although I am a native English speaker, I enjoy the entire communication process with the English language -- reading, speaking, and writing. I have also taken other languages such as Spanish and German but I am not proficient so I can empathize with students' frustrations with the English language which has helped me to be a successful tutor in this subject area. Hey, I am available to help you and I would count it a privilege to help you reach your goals. Learning is challenging but fun and I will do my best to help you enjoy the process without compromising the focus to achieve identified goals. I am very respectful of your time and my own. I will work with you to develop a plan that helps manage, maximize, and properly balance learning time with the rest of life's responsibilities. Won't you call me today?

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I am qualified to teach this subject because I am a public speaker in my regular position as a public affairs manager. I have also taught public speaking as an Adjunct Instructor with ITT Technical Institute. I have also participated in Toastmasters International at various times though out my career.

Sociology

I minored in sociology while pursuing my undergraduate degree in Journalism at Anderson University, a liberal arts college. I completed more than 18 hours of coursework in the subject area of Marriage & Family Relations including a post-graduate sociology study program encompassing an urban life immersion at the Urban Life Center in Chicago, IL. This program enhanced my understanding of the structure and dynamics of society and its connection to individual perceptions and experiences. The course work prepared me for graduate studies at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette.

Writing

I have a Master's degree in Communications and undergraduate degree in Journalism and am an accomplished freelance newspaper and magazine writer and have taught writing skills development at both the secondary and post-secondary level. I enjoy helping young people develop their writing skills which is foundational for long-term academic and professional success.
