About Liz

I am a lead guitar player and multi instrumentalist of over 15 years, and would love to teach you everything I know!

Each lesson is eagerly tailored to the student's strengths and needs in order to help them learn to the best of their ability, and ultimately, have fun!

As a student of mine, you will come to understand that music is a language, and we want to give you the tools and resources that you need in order to speak and understand that language fluently. Prioritizing your interests and genres that you prefer, we will expand in areas where you seek improvement, as well as incorporating ear training, music theory, and new exercises and techniques specific to your skill level and instrument. Each lesson is tailored to each student's learning style. From reading music and ear training, to writing counterpoint and mastering improvisational techniques, together we will find ways to help you grow as a musician. :)

*** Lesson Details ***
When we schedule our first lesson, I will ask you a few questions about your interests, goals in taking lessons, and your priorities related to music. This way, I can be sure to tailor the lesson to meet your expectations and goals.

Generally, my lessons lean towards feeling laid back, and no pressure... along with positive energy and passion for music!

Curriculum is catered to the student, and based on student goals and priorities. Jazz studies will differ from studying rock n roll, as well as classical, etc. Once we have an introductory lesson, I will be able to review with you the materials, passages, postures, techniques, and music we will be working with. You always are encouraged to have a say in what you want to learn, whether it is your 1st or your 50th lesson.

I have been studying music for over 20 years, through school and college, on my own, and with private instructors including Toby Walker, Anthony Wellington, and Buddy Charleton. I consider my main instrument to be guitar- I have been playing for about 16 years, and am comfortable in just about any professional situation on my instrument. I play lead guitar, rhythm, etc. We can go over many techniques and subjects to help you become more versatile and well rounded: including ostinato picking, slide/open tunings, improvisation, and composition.

I also teach pedal steel guitar, I have studied for about 8 years, some of that time was with world renowned steel guitarist, Buddy Charleton.

Thank you for your time and interest, and please be in touch with any questions you may have on your musical journey. Best wishes!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

Liz has studied general music for her whole life, and enjoys passing information along to help tutor her students. She will use the appropriate method book for your needs. She is comfortable teaching total beginners, as well as college level General Music.

A skilled lead guitarist and utility player, Liz lives for music. She has been playing professionally for over a decade, and is known as a strong and dependable touring, local, sub, and session musician. She is also sought out as a very in-demand private lessons teacher, all over the country.

For this 26 year old, things seem to be going very well... but she is only getting started.

Starting out in rural Huckleberry Bottom, MD, Liz became interested in music performance in the elementary school band program. Throughout her childhood and teenage years, she became proficient on clarinet, bassoon, oboe, saxophone, guitar, pedal steel guitar, dobro, banjo, and slide guitar, spending hours upon hours practicing. She began her professional career in her early teens as a lead guitarist in the southern rock group, the Dixie Hiway Band. Driven to reach educational and financial goals in an attempt to create a good starting point for a career in music, she attended college in conjunction with high school and worked 40+ hours/week in many different odd jobs. During that time, she saved up for her professional gear, took every playing opportunity that arose, and sharpened her studio chops. While living in MD, she did live and session work with the Lowriders Blues Band (elec gtr, sld gtr, vox), Family Power Trio (ld gtr), Devon Nickoles (psg, ac. gtr, vox), Scarlet Cord Jazz Ensemble (elec gtr, psg), and picked up sub work with a number of various groups in the PA / MD/ DC/ VA area. Upon moving to a more urban and centrally located area outside of Boston at the age of 22, and Liz finally began working solely as a full time musician.

From an educational standpoint, Liz has studied privately with many fantastic teachers, including Buddy Charleton, Chris Parello, "Little" Toby Walker, Anthony Wellington, ?and Mike Orenzoff. She has participated in many programs and events as a musician, student, and teacher, including the National Guitar Workshop and the McDaniel College Summer Music Program. Liz has studied music at Carroll Community College, and at McDaniel College from 2007 to 2010. Although no degree has been obtained, Liz has taken every musical elective and extracurricular activity available, as well as reaching other degree-specific qualifications in English, Math, and History. In an effort to reach her professional goals, she has chosen to discontinue her progress towards a college degree specializing in the music field, and instead pursue a career in music with more value placed on experience and skill.

Liz was a recipient of the “Louis Armstrong Award” for her jazz guitar studies as a teenager. She has also earned the title of 1st chair bassoonist at Towson University’s Junior/Senior Honor Band, 2nd chair guitar in Maryland's All State Jazz Ensemble, and participated in the 1st annual World Guitar Congress, attending seminars and discussions with Derek Trucks, Hubert Sumlin, Bob Margolin, Warren Hayes, Tuck & Patti, and many other great players and luthiers in the worldwide guitar community.

Currently, Liz works in a multitude of settings as a lead guitarist and multi-instrumentalist. Combining stable music instruction, experience, and a strong passion to learn, Liz has become a versatile, seasoned musician and instructor at a relatively young age. With much love and determination, she is ready for a lifelong career in music?.
