Hello! Thanks for taking the time to read my profile. Let me introduce myself. I am a history instructor at Black Hills State University. I love teaching, and I am grateful for this opportunity to work with students one-on-one. I teach small classes that allow me to interact more closely with my students. This is the kind of teaching I enjoy the most, and it lets me more effectively share my passion for history and love of writing with students. I am primarily interested in working with high school and college students.
As a teacher and a tutor, my goal is not only to help students succeed in history classes, but also for them to have fun doing history. I use a lot of different sources, especially pop culture, to help my students connect to history, For example, in a recent WW2 class, we used Spiegelman's graphic novels Maus and Maus II in studying the Holocaust. I also emphasize that history is relevant to today's world. For example, in a World History class, students wrote essays comparing the British East India Company (founded circa 1600) with modern multinational companies like Apple. I also use a lot of pictures, movies and websites to help my students.
I can offer a lot of professional and personal experience, both in and outside of academia, to my students.
At the college level, I have taught courses in World History, European History, British History, Environmental History, WW2, and Humanities and Western Civilization. Some of the books I have covered in my classes are: Machiavelli's The Prince, Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Shelley's Frankenstein, Descartes' Discourse on Method, Locke's Second Treatise on Government, Rousseau's Discourse on Inequality, Marx's Communist Manifesto, and DuBois' The Souls of Black Folk. I have also led groups as part of study abroad programs, and have traveled and lived in Europe, including during the time of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.
Before I entered my PhD program, I coordinated an environmental education program for high school students for the City of San Diego. I planned, organized and carried out class presentations, school energy audits, and community service projects. I have graded the AP World History Exam for the past three summers, and intend to grade it again next summer.
Writing is very important to me, and plays an integral part in my courses, I want to help students write clearly and accurately and express themselves well. I can help students with grammar, style, punctuation, and content.
I am patient, friendly, and have a good sense of humor. I really enjoy working with students one-on-one.
I look forward to working with you! Hello! Thanks for taking the time to read my profile. Let me introduce myself. I am a history instructor at Black Hills State University. His fluency in his subject and his enthusiasm for history makes the session vivid and easy to understand. He has a dialogue with my son about periods of history that my son has questions about. His prep for AP World History has me confident that my son will do well on his test.
My son received very constructive feedback on essays that he had written, and felt that this session was the most productive yet.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
