About Josh

Hello! I absolutely love education especially the opportunity to help young people realize their passions and dive into their dreams! Education truly is the great equalizer and the vehicle that is able to lift anyone out of any circumstance to a place of success and achievement. I take my duty as a teacher and a tutor very seriously, as I believe that I may play a part, however large or small, in preparing the next generation in shaping our planet!

I have been teaching and tutoring for over 10 years and I love every minute of it. There is nothing that can replace the joy of seeing a young person learn and grow! I hope we can work together soon, I know that I can be of assistance to you!

In high school I began tutoring younger students, and I continued that work throughout my college years. I went to Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD which has been recognized as one of the most prestigious colleges in the mid-west. At Augustana I received a Bachelor's degree with majors in Physical Education and All-Grades Education with a minor in History and endorsements in Health Education and a coaching certificate. Upon graduating from college I began teaching and had the opportunity to mold young minds across many different disciplines. I have worked with students ranging from elementary up to high school in subjects including history, health, biology, ICT, CTE, physical education, college prep, SAT/ACT prep, and others. I enjoy being in the classroom, but I must say I feel more of a passion for small group and one on one instruction, where we can pinpoint individual struggles and put a plan in place to overcome personal hurdles.

I believe as a tutor it is my job to help students receive value and knowledge. In my experience the downfall of many curriculum is the singular focus on knowledge without any thought for value and application. For example many adults look back on their history classes with disgust, as they no longer remember the dates and names that were drilled into them. However if they had been taught WHY it was important to learn about the individuals that shaped our world in the past, perhaps they could reach back to those lessons, to make sound decisions for the future, rather than simply looking back on those memories as a "waste of time."

When it comes to test prep and ACT/SAT tutoring, I am simply just a great test taker, I took the ACT test one time, with no "prep course" or other sort of previous instruction and I scored a 35! In case you aren't familiar with the ACT the top score is a 36! So with that one awesome test score I could sign my ticket to just about any college I wanted and I gave myself a significant boost in obtaining free financial aide and scholarships. I'm not sure where I picked up a lot of the tricks and strategies I employ when taking tests, but I thoroughly enjoy passing them on so that others can be opened up to the same opportunities I had!

Probably my biggest asset as a history teacher is the fact that I absolutely love history! Perhaps the only thing I love more than learning things about history is... teaching history! I think what makes history difficult for most people is the fact that most teachers try to drill you with names and dates. Instead, I focus on teaching concepts, look at the cause and effect... how one decision ten years ago forced another decision today. The value of learning and understanding our history is being able to use those lessons to better our lives today! I love helping young minds learn to bridge that gap and learn from the mistakes and success of those that have come before!

I played football from young city league teams, through middle school and high school, and into the NCAA! I then coached at the high school level for years! I know a lot about football and I truly enjoy the game. To be honest I probably enjoy coaching more than I did playing. When you coach you get that added "teaching" element, where you can use adversities on the field to teach lessons that apply else where. There is also the added component of strategy that you do not get to witness as a player. There is a chess match going on in every football game, that most players and fans... and even some coaches, never fully appreciate!

As a young teacher I was used as a sort of "utility man," and I spent my days bouncing around from classroom to classroom teaching a plethora of different subjects to an even broader age range. However that experience has given me value for many different subject matters and a broad understanding of how to engage students, even when they don't initially see the value of the information. I've learned that if you can get a student engaged, it doesn't matter what you are teaching... once their hooked they WILL soak up whatever you pass on!

I know I can be of service to you! We will learn a lot, and we'll have a lot of fun doing it! Contact me today and we'll get going on our learning adventure!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Football

I absolutely love the game of football, from the physical aspect of the game, to the mental chess game and strategy employed by coaches. I played football for over 10 years from middle school, into high school, and through college. I received many awards in my playing days including recognition as All-City, All-Conference, and All-State in my senior year. Upon graduating college and securing a teaching job I coached both middle school and high school football. In the years that I coached high school varsity my team went to the State Championship twice.
