Hello! My name is Dr. Jamin H., and I am both an academic and a musician (though people consider me a 21st century Renaissance man who does all kinds of things - welding, landscaping, home remodel, business and livestock management, etc.).
As a musician, I started playing drumset and snare at age 6 and continued playing all ensembles for high school. In college, I was the lead percussionist in concert band, jazz band, chamber orchestra, and also played two years for the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra and for several creative gigs (plays, theatre, etc.). I taught several drummers throughout this period, especially focusing on rock/jazz/funk drumset, and snare. I do not teach any mallets. Today, I continue teaching lessons and play at a variety of local settings.
As an academic who specializes in Christian theology and religious studies, I hold a BA in Theology, an MA in Religion, and a ThD in Theology from the University of South Africa. In addition to being founding faculty and chair of the department at a local college, I am an active member of several professional societies, have written several books, and have also been published in peer-reviewed journals. I regularly speak and lecture on a variety of subjects related to the Christian faith and religious studies. Hello! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BA in Theology, an MA in Religion, and a ThD in Systematic Theology, and have taught biblical studies and New Testament Greek for several years at the college level. I've been published in the field of biblical exegesis for peer-reviewed journals, and am an active scholar in the field of bibliology as well.
I've been drumming since I was 6, and played for all ensembles during High School. I received several college scholarships for music, and accepted one from Dordt College (where I attended from 2005-2009). While in college I was the lead drummer for Concert Band, Jazz Band, Chamber Orchestra, and also participated as a percussionist for the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra for several years. During that entire time I taught drum lessons for all ages of students.
Today I play live gigs for various performance settings. I've been playing with Charles C., one of America's most decorated jazz guitarists (he is currently prof of music at a State College). I am his preferred drummer, and our work can be viewed upon request. I have also performed with other local musicians and vocalists.
I have taught New Testament (Koine) Greek for three years, and have authored my own grammar the past six years (still awaiting publication). I am currently teaching Greek III (Syntax), and have published peer-review papers on Greek exegesis.
All of this is for a reading knowledge of Koine Greek - *not* a speaking knowledge of modern Greek.
Three years ago I finally launched an official photography business. I do a variety of professional photography with my wife in one of the most beautiful areas in America. All of my work has been received positively, and I have taught a number of students on DSLR use and basic photography techniques.
My public speaking career began in my senior year of high school, where I advanced to the State level (in South Dakota) for Oral Interpretation, and received the highest score possible for my speech. I continued to use my gifts of speaking in public debates in college, as a public announcer on the radio, in sermons for various churches, and for lectures at academic conferences.
I am a regular public speaker on a variety of subjects, and continue to use them everyday as a professor. I am well received by all my students, employers, and by those who attend my lectures or conference talks.
Students who want to learn about public speaking will begin my tutoring by identifying the key elements that make a good speech (and reversely, key elements that take away from a good speech). I then begin to have students read from an article or some kind of script, and focus on one element at a time, building confidence and skill.
I have a BA in Theology, an MA in Religion, and a ThD in Systematic Theology, and have taught religious studies for several years at the college level. Although my area is Christian studies, I have also taught courses in apologetics, world religions, and philosophy.
I have been a member and co-leader of a Table Tennis club for nearly three years. Although I have not played in formal tournaments (our state is too small for them), I have regularly played with formidable table tennis players, including a Wyoming State Champion, and a variety of international players who have temporary residence for their education in Rapid City.
I probably rank in the top 15% of our best local players, and play every week.
I have been an active non-fiction writer since college days, where I received a scholarship in journalism and wrote for the college newspaper. I also received a 4.0 in Advanced Expository Writing II during this time, and have blogged for various sites.
As a professional, I've been published in several peer-review journals and magazines, some more technical than others. My strongest area is in persuasive and research writing. I continue to write books, which are selling on Amazon and are endorsed by leading scholars of the relevant subjects.
