About Emily

Bio

I've been tutoring, especially math, off and on since 2002. I have tutored middle school general studies; high school math, biology, English, and history; adult remedial math; college-level math and chemistry; as well as a range of age ranges, from pre-teen to college students and adults.

I have a BA in anthropology (from the University of Montana) and a BS in chemistry (from UAA). I am very comfortable helping with the basics of almost any subject, especially math and the sciences.

I try to find ways of making the subject understandable. If the student doesn't get it, I try a different method. I always try to make the subject interesting, and attempt to cultivate a passion within the student for learning and mastering that subject.

I work hard to improve subject comprehension, so long as the student also works at trying.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

After taking Algebra I in 7th grade, I proceeded on an accelerated course of math learning, including taking calculus as a high school sophomore. Knowing the materials in Algebra I for so many years, as well as knowing what the most important topics are for future learning, I have been able to tutor other students over the years. Algebra I is an important stepping stone to developing essential math skills.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I am well versed in the topics of algebra 2. I have tutored several students in algebra as well.
Calculus,

Calculus

Having taken calculus I in high school, I learned the material slowly and carefully. I feel I am especially qualified to tutor calculus because it is the subject I've tutored most. I also have a small library of resources to refer to if necessary.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I have a BS in chemistry from the University of Alaska Anchorage. Additionally, I have tutored lower division chemistry classes.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

My BA degree included a mathematics minor, so I have a strong background with most of lower-division math courses (up to and including Calculus I); plus I have been working with at least one student every year tutoring this level of math.

Daughter came home and said "I actually understood what she was telling me!" Said she explained it really well! Thank you!

Understands the student

Emily faced my son who had never been tutored. He was not open to the experience. She understood this and was able to break down some of the walls. She will give a solid effort for the student.

Emily helped my son through his Honors Chemistry prep - and was AMAZING!

She worked patiently with him through key points he was struggling with and now he is prepped and ready for his test. She reviewed an essay for him and was so helpful in all regards. Will definitely be back again. Thanks so much.

Straight A's for Emily

Our daughter, a senior in high school, was having difficulty in her Algebra II math class due to a teacher who didn't have time for her students and would shame them to the point they were afraid to ask questions. A friend recommended the web site WyzAnt.com wherein we discovered Emily. After an email request for help, Emily arranged a time for us to meet. Emily sat down with our daughter and was very understanding and patient with her as they worked together to bring her failing grade up 24% points to a passing score. Our daughter's confidence level increased and she looked forward to Emily's visits. I feel if we would have contacted Emily sooner, our girl would have had a stronger grasp of math and could have done much better in school. I would recommend Emily to anyone who has children who may be struggling in the area of math. Emily was accommodating, and on occasion she would stay over her allotted time when she knew our girl had an exam the next day just to make sure she comprehended everything. We give Emily an "A" rating.

Words are not enough to express how I feel , she is very knowledgeable and she will go the extra mile to help.

Went through practice math exercises, explained her rationale and listened to me. I enjoyed working with her, she does research information before the class. My grade has remarkably improved. Thank you.

Great High School Chemistry Tutor!

Emily tutored my son (10th grade, home-schooled) in high school chemistry. He took an online chemistry course this year through the University of Nebraska High School. The coursework seemed very thorough, even including labs done at home. However, the course included no video teaching sessions, to our disappointment. So, I contacted Emily and she tutored him throughout the year, filling in the gaps and explaining topics that are hard to grasp from reading the text alone. She was available to work weekly, drove to our house (which saved us time in our school schedule), and was flexible when our schedule changed. She was professional, helpful, patient, and adapted to my son's learning style and preferences. I recommend her and appreciate her services.

Great Tutor and Very patient!

I got a C on my first chemistry test, so I decided to get a tutor to prepare for the next one. Emily helped me understand all the concepts and make connections to real life scenarios. I worked with her for my second test and got a high B. Since it worked out so well, I decided I'd see her before every test thereafter, and my grade for the last two tests was an A. Also I got an A in the class. She knows how to explain and how to get a message across in a way that you can grasp the concept. I don't know any other tutors, but Emily is really good at her job!

Patient and Reliable

Emily is an excellent tutor for my 13 year old daughter. Middle schoolers can be a challenge, but through patience and creativity Emily has been able to connect with my daughter and spark her interest in math. We feel very lucky to have found Emily!
