About Karen

Teaching enables me to share my lifelong love of learning and discovery with students. Ranking in the top 17% of my graduating class did not come easily. I understand the challenges that students face with so many things pulling at them while trying to stay ahead in school. Learning is difficult work and takes dedication and commitment. I believe that good study habits and learning techniques can make learning easier for students; and I incorporate these into my lesson plans.

I specialize in history (my college major), English and writing and make this an enjoyable experience for the student rather than drudgery. One of my goals for each session is to challenge the student but avoid overwhelming them. Each session will be followed by challenging but reasonable homework assignments which will be assessed and incorporated into frequent progress reports. I strongly believe in positive reinforcement that will keep the student engaged in the learning process.

I hold myself to a high standard and encourage frequent feedback, and I never bill for a session if the student or parent is not completely satisfied with my tutoring. I am happy to provide a free consultation meeting so that we can both agree that this will be a good fit for all involved.

I try to be flexible with time and will offer makeup classes if a student cancels less that 24 hours before the session.

I provide a a quiet and comfortable study space for the student and can offer private and group classes. However, I am happy to travel to another location that is safe and convenient for the student if needed.

I am looking forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies.

As a longtime business expert, I have written numerous articles, brochures, papers and proposals which require the highest standards of proofreading as well as the use of appropriate vocabulary and creative writing skills. As a teacher, by goal is to encourage the student to use tools to help enhance their skills. I minored in English in college with all honors and advanced placement courses.

As Executive Director for two Chambers of Commerce, I have had extensive business experience including advanced courses in business and marketing from the Institute of Organizational Management sponsored by the United States Chamber of Commerce. My primary responsibilities over the last six years have been marketing and business development. I have multiple reference sources to draw from as well as the entire business community to use for case studies and examples.

I encourage you to contact me to learn more about my skills and to schedule lessons. I look forward to assisting you in your adventure into learning as a pleasure not as a labor.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
