About Rachel

I have been a teacher for 4 years and spent 2 years prior to that as a substitute teacher. My background is in elementary education (K-6). My favorite grades are 4th through 6th grade, but I also enjoy teaching primary grades. I have taught a wide variety of students, including Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), special education, English Language Learners, and everything in between. I love helping students become more successful and finding what styles and methods work for them. Watching my students become more confident because of tools I have taught them is the most rewarding part of my job!

I have a Masters in Education with a Specialization in Educational Technology. My Bachelors is in Pre-Law Studies with a minor in Alternative Dispute Resolution. I attended one year of law school before determining that it was not the career path for me. I got into teaching because my mom is a teacher and I was a high school women's lacrosse coach. I realized that the time I felt best about the work I was doing was when I was helping kids learn and grow.

My teaching has been filmed and shared with all teachers in the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) and I have been asked to develop and instruct a number of professional development courses for teachers and administrators. I have been selected to be awarded multiple scholarships to attend workshops to enhance my teaching. I was nominated for the Aspiring Administrators Program through San Diego State University and the SDUSD.

I have taught 1st-6th grade math in the classroom and have tutored 4th and 5th grade students in math. I have training in a variety of math curriculum, Common Core math practices, and special education math pedagogy. I embrace the idea that all students learn math differently, so I strive to help students find the methods that work best for them.

Many of my students have been English Language Learners, including some who had never attended school before coming to the United States. My students show significant growth in reading, writing, listening, speaking, language, grammar, and English Language Development (ELD).

Even before the Common Core was mandated, I worked at school sites that began to shift their teaching and research to meet the needs of the Common Core State Standards. I completed my teaching credential program and Masters in Education studying a combination of the California State Standards and the Common Core State Standards. While I understand that the Common Core is controversial, I believe in the idea of developing critical thinkers who are able to attack problems in a variety of ways.

If you are interested in not just improving in a specific academic area, but in also finding methods that work best for you, we will be a great fit! If you are a middle school, high school, or college student reading about all of my elementary school experience, do not be discouraged to contact me. I also have experience working with kids and adults in helping them be more successful in a variety of academic areas. I hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

Although I am an elementary school teacher, which only requires American History through the mid-1800s, I have extensive knowledge of American History. In July 2016, I attended the Colonial Williamsburg Teachers Institute on full scholarship. In June 2017, I will be attending a teachers seminar on Thomas Jefferson and the Enlightenment at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland on a full scholarship. I am currently in the process of obtaining my Single Subject Credential in Social Sciences from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

CBEST

I passed all three sections of the CBEST on 09/27/2011 with a total score of 184. Since then, I have passed the Multiple Subject CSET, which is a more difficult and lengthier test with similar topics.

Common Core

I hold a Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (expiration 07/01/2021). My teacher credential program and Masters of Education incorporated the Common Core State Standards, and I teach according to these standards on a daily basis in my classroom.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (expiration 07/01/2021). I am currently a 1st grade teacher and have taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grade in elementary schools in San Diego County. Prior to becoming a full-time teacher, I substitute taught for 2 years. I substitute taught in Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Elementary Science

I am an elementary school teacher who has training in the California State Science Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). I have attended various workshops on NGSS, including a week-long program at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. I have developed a variety of STEAM lesson plans and am a robotics coach.

ESL/ESOL

I am an elementary school teacher that has worked with English Language Learners in 1st through 8th grade. A majority of the students I have taught throughout my teaching career have been English Language Learners. I have helped my students progress on the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) from Beginner to Intermediate in a single school year. I have also had many students who have been reclassified as Fluent English Proficient.

Grammar

I am currently a 1st grade teacher, which requires teaching grammar on a daily basis. The majority of students I have worked with in my teaching career have been English Language Learners, so I have worked with students (and their parents!) of a variety of ages on improving their grammar.

Handwriting

I am an elementary school teacher who currently teachers 1st grade. We work on handwriting on a daily basis. I have students that receive Occupational Therapy for one hour a week and need more assistance from me with their handwriting than the typical student. Whenever I teacher 3rd grade or above, I teach cursive to my students.

Phonics

I am currently a 1st grade teacher. Much of 1st grade revolves around learning phonics, so I spend time teaching phonics every single school day. I also have worked with many English Language Learners in grades 4-6, so I know how to help students who do not have a command of the English language develop their phonics skills.

Reading

I am an elementary school teacher who teaches reading every single day. I have worked with a variety of students including Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), English Language Learners, special education students, and everything in between.

Social Studies

I hold a Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (expiration 07/01/2021). Teaching Social Studies is embedded in my credential. I also am seeking a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Social Sciences from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. I have taken and passed one of the CSET Examinations that is necessary for obtaining this credential. The other test portions are scheduled for early May. I attended the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute in July 2016 on full scholarship to learn and lesson plan for teaching history/social sciences.

Spelling

I currently teach 1st grade, which requires teaching a lot of the spelling rules of English. I have classroom experience in teaching spelling to 4th-6th graders as well. Many of my students have been English Language Learners and I also have Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) certification, so I have worked with all levels of spelling ability.

Study Skills

I am an elementary school teacher who has worked with a variety of students in different grade levels. I often help my students learn study skills in order to help them manage their time, accomplish tasks, and learn and practice academic material.

World History

I am a teacher who has teaching experience in grades K-8. I have taught in 6th and 7th grade, which involves ancient civilizations and other world history. I am a history nerd and am currently seeking my Single Subject Teaching Credential from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Writing

I am an elementary school teacher and a lifelong student. I have proven that I am a successful writing teacher through the work my students produce. When being evaluated by my school principals, I have been told that my strongest subject is teaching writing. I have a Bachelors in Pre-Law Studies and spent one year in law school before becoming a teacher, so I also have technical writing abilities that I can share with my students.
