Denison University (English Literature)
I am a 2016 Denison University graduate with a BA in English Literature. In 2012, I graduated from Medfield High School. Throughout my time at Medfield and Denison, I've had the opportunity to tutor students in literature, grammar, reading, and writing. I am currently participating in an online course to receive my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification. Following my completion of the course in October, I will be traveling to Prague, Czech Republic to pursue a career in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to elementary students.
Throughout high school and college, I’ve had countless opportunities to expand my knowledge of how to carefully and accurately proofread, compose well-constructed essays, and use proper grammar.
As a senior at Medfield High School, I participated in an AWS (Advanced Writing Seminar) class that aimed to help other students improve their writing skills. As an AWS student, I worked to edit and proofread student’s papers - topics ranging from argument-based compositions to college essays. As a writer and aspiring teacher, I find that a student is most likely to succeed if their instructor can give both constructive feedback (to improve general essay writing knowledge) and positive reinforcement (to commend them for their hard work and dedication). By the end of the year, my students were producing strong, compelling essays. I was thrilled to play a role in their success!
Throughout my collegiate years at Denison, my ability to compose analytical essays improved immensely. When I was a junior, I was able to pass on this knowledge to 2 Granville High School students. Before each tutoring session, I worked to come up with lesson plans and writing strategies that would eventually help them understand the material and become confident in their capability to succeed in an rigorous school environment.
As I mentioned before, I am currently enrolled in an online course to receive my TEFL certification. Because I am an aspiring ESL instructor, my students will not be native English speakers. Needless to say, a huge part of my training is learning how to use proper English grammar. Since I have spent the past 5 weeks training to be an expert in this field (and will continue to do so for the next 2 months), I believe that I would be an excellent tutor when it comes to teaching English grammar!
I have always found it incredibly fulfilling to help students reach their full academic potential, so tutoring is something I have always been passionate about. I would not be where I am today without the inspiration my tutors provided for me throughout my 12 years of public school. As a tutor, I deeply value positive feedback and strive to adjust my lesson plans according to different learning styles. I am known for my optimism, constant encouragement, kindness, and enthusiasm for reading and writing. If these are qualities that you are looking for in a tutor, please contact me and I would be more than happy to help you or your child build confidence and succeed in an educational environment! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
