About Barbara

I have a Masters of Instruction and Administration from Wilmington University, January 2001 and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Gwynedd Mercy University, May 1997. My prior students have always seen me as a teacher that cares a tremendous amount. I have spent countless hours before and after school making sure that my student’s needs were met, whether that meant helping them with reading or supplying them with materials needed for projects. I’ve offered free tutoring to my students before school and have offered afterschool Spanish and environmental science programs. Helping students excel and love learning is my passion!

I have taught reading, and all its components, for many, many years, including gifted and talented English classes. My last teaching position (which is currently ongoing) was as an adjunct at a local community college where I teach reading to incoming students.

I am a dedicated individual that strives to better the lives of children through positive reinforcement. I work well with students of all ages and I try to make learning fun and enjoyable. Please contact me today so that we may work together to better your child's education.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Gwynedd University and a Masters of Instruction and Administration in Education from Wilmington University. I have taught all subjects, grades 5-graduate school. Throughout the 17+ years of teaching, I have tutored numerous students in all subjects.

Grammar

I was most recently a reading adjunct at Trident Tech College, which included grammar instruction.

Handwriting

As a homeschool teacher, I have taught my two oldest to write in cursive and I am currently working on penmanship my kindergartner. Prior, I have taught cursive to fifth graders in a public school setting.

Homeschool

I currently homeschool my three children, ages 5, 9, and 12. This is our third year successfully homeschooling, and I cover all core subjects plus foreign language. I feel that as a former public school and current college adjunct, I am qualified to teach this subject. I have a Masters of Instruction and Administration from Wilmington University, January 2001 and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Gwynedd Mercy University, May 1997.

Phonics

While teaching kindergarten, fourth grade, and sixth grade, we constantly review phonics. My sixth grader is dyslexic and is unable to remember the phonetic sounds and therefore must review them with me on a continuous basis. Currently we use All About Spelling which is based on phonetic awareness. Reading

All I ever wanted to do when I grew up was to read books and write stories. I was the kid in class who always got in trouble for reading a book when I was supposed to be listening. In fact, I’m still that person today. I go out of my way to read a good book to my kids and share its magical story. In the car, we are always listening to an audio book. I was also always interested in writing. I wrote for my high school paper, the local paper, and for my college paper. I encourage my kids to write because the more they write, the better their writing will get. I’m also a fan of grammar and it is something that I am constantly teaching my children. I can make reading, writing, and grammar interesting for your child, I can get them hooked
