About Lisa

I have 12 years of teaching experience. I taught second grade all subjects for 11 years. I then taught fifth grade common core math for one year. For many years, I tutored a variety of age groups after school. Some of the ages I tutored were Kindergarten, Second grade, and Fourth grade. Each of these tutoring age groups were all tutored in reading at their grade level.

Tutoring at my home has brought on several students from fifth grade GATE math, first grade reading, second grade reading, and eighth grade Algebra. I enjoy tutoring students that need a little extra help, in addition to building up their self confidence.

I love math. More importantly, I love teaching math to students that are struggling. Math is a process and the student needs to learn to trust themselves to help them feel successful. Math has many ways that concepts can be taught, and it's my job to find out what works best for the student in order to continue on with more challenging concepts.

Balanced Literacy is a great program that I was extensively trained. My training lasted for two years. I taught the Balanced Literacy program and its components 10 years. It focused on guided reading, word study, spelling, phonics, reading, writing, shared reading, and shared writing.

My certifications are in Early Childhood, and Elementary Education. I have a B.S. in Elementary Education grades 1-6, and also hold a Master's degree with a specialty in Communications.

I taught phonics for eleven years. Use of poems with phonics skills is a good way to learn the skills, and use them in a reading context. Phonics are extremely important to learn and understand in order to be able to learn to read, which eventually will lead to being able to read fluently.

I taught Elementary Education for 12 years. Eleven of those years I taught second grade, then for one year I taught fifth grade math to three classes in addition to language for my homeroom. The math that I taught was using the common core state standards. They were challenging, but my students succeeded.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

My experience in teaching was that of 12 years. I taught second grade all subjects for 11 years. Then I taught fifth grade common core math for one year. After school for many years I tutored a variety of age groups. Some of the ages I tutored were Kindergarten, Second grade, and fourth grade. Elementary Math

I moved from teaching Second Grade to Fifth Grade due to my love of teaching Math, and being successful at it. Math is one of my strengths, that I am continually finding things, different ways, and new ideas to help students understand math in a fun, stress-free atmosphere.

Phonics

I taught phonics for eleven years. Use of poems with phonics skills is a good way to learn the skills, and use them in a reading context.

Phonics are extremely important to learn and understand in order to be able to learn to read, which eventually lead to being able to read fluently.
