About Don

Dear parents, business professionals, and students of every age,

I am passionate about the English language and love teaching others to read, write and speak the language well, drawing upon my deep experience in the field.

My career as a writer and teacher spans more than 30 years. During that time I've written four books, held senior editorial positions with various publications, and established a successful career as a freelance writer.

My degree, from the University of Oklahoma, is in journalism with an emphasis on English and English literature.

I have taught English to individuals of every age, ranging from sixth graders to 50-year-old adults. I have ample experience teaching one-on-one and also teaching classes of up to 20 people.

In addition to my experience here in the United States, I have been privileged to teach English classes and tutor individuals in various parts of Central and South America. Since I am fluent in Portuguese and conversant in Spanish, I can be of special help to those who are learning to read and write English as a second language.

Depending on your skill level and goals, I may use one or more of the following texts:

o The Art of Teaching Writing, by Lucy McCormick Calkins
o The Reading Zone: How to Help Kids Become Skilled, Passionate,
Habitual, Critical Readers, by Nancie Atwell & Shelley Harwayne
o Teaching Adolescent Writers, by Kelly Gallagher
o The Teacher's Grammar of English, by Ron Cowan

I love to work with young people and inspire them to read and write well and have garnered special experience with kids who are home-schooled, as I successfully home-schooled both of my sons in English and English composition.

I know how to make learning fun, so my students, whether they are 15 or 50, can actually enjoy learning and delight in measuring their progress.

I live in Summerville, South Carolina, and can travel a reasonable distance for classes. My rate is $30 an hour for a single student, or $40 an hour for two students taught simultaneously. I can also help edit and proofread your essays, articles, theses, reports and book manuscripts for submission and/or publication.

With warm regards,

Don B.
Summerville, SC

P.S. If you are a business person or executive interested in conversational English, I can help you polish your skills and eliminate embarrassing errors in your speech that you may not even be aware of.

P.P.S. If you are preparing for your SAT, TOEFL, or other exam, I can help you prepare.

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
