Clemson University (Sec. Edu. - Spanish)
Furman University (Master's)
My name is Derek. I have been an educator for 16 years, and have taught at both the high school and college levels. My main subject is Spanish, but I have also taught drama, sociology, history, physical education, and health.
I earned my Bachelor's degree in Spanish from Clemson University, and later a Master's in health and exercise xcience from Furman University.
In teaching Spanish, and other subjects as well, I believe in a similar approach to playing a musical instrument: You start with the smallest parts of the subject and build up until you can communicate or perform in full. Language is something to be practiced as well as studied, again like music or sports. I believe anyone can learn if they are willing to put forth consistent effort, and have the desire to achieve. Derek is providing bridge tutoring from High School Spanish II to Spanish III Honors. Our daughter liked Derek's teaching methodology and her ability to be comfortable in the learning sessions.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been involved with the sport of basketball as a player or coach for almost 30 years. I have coached high school basketball for the past 15 years, but have coached young people from 1st grade through 12th grade. I am a lover of sport in general, but basketball is my passion. I have coached beginners and I have coached region championship teams. I hope to be able to be of assistance to you as well.
I have 16 years of teaching experience at the secondary and college levels. I have traveled to several Central American countries, spending a total of 4 months in Spanish speaking cultures.
I have taught classroom, conversational, and business Spanish to students of various ages and backgrounds.
I taught high school Drama for 5 years, in which time my groups staged 4 plays which were quite positively rated and received by our audiences. I also had the opportunity to lead a group of actors in performing at the 2009 National Performing Arts Festival in New York City. I have sung and acted, as an amateur, since I was five years old.
In teaching the course, I tend to focus more on characterization and visualization. I believe acting is becoming someone you are not for a short period of time; not simply pretending to play a part.
