Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am the editor of "Uniquely Gifted: Identifying and Meeting the Needs of the Twice Exceptional Student." I have led workshops throughout the nation on how to reach and teach students who have ADD/ADHD and other special needs. I have assisted in preparation of 504 plans specific to students who have ADD/ADHD and I have experience as an in-school advocate. I also have assisted in designing home-school programs for these students and have taught students with ADD/ADHD.

I have assisted in the preparation of 504 plans and IEPs. I have experience as a parent and student advocate. I have assisted in designing and implementing home-school programs for these students.

Dyslexia

I am the editor of "Uniquely Gifted: Identifying and Meeting the Needs of the Twice Exceptional Student." I have led workshops throughout the nation on how to reach and teach students who have special needs, including giftedness as well as learning difficulties. I have assisted in the preparation of 504 plans and IEPs. I have experience as an in-school advocate. I also have assisted in designing home-school programs for these students and have taught students who have dyslexia.

Handwriting

Several methods of teaching handwriting exist, and my approach utilizes the natural balance of the child's hand and coordinating the eye and hand movements. I can work with children who have dysgraphia. As a teacher at an area children's program, I have worked on handwriting skills with students from ages 5 to 15 to ensure their skill development.

Microsoft Publisher

I have created several newsletters and flyers using Microsoft Publisher, including a project for a nonprofit organization and a newsletter for an elementary school. I have a master's degree in English and an undergraduate degree in journalism, with special knowledge of layout and design.

Public Speaking

I have been an avid public speaker for more than 20 years. I currently work as a Darkness to Light Stewards of Children training facilitator and conduct workshops for teachers, social workers, and the general public. I have spoken to groups of all sizes, in classrooms and auditoriums, and I was a conference keynote speaker.

My skills include PowerPoint presentations and general public speaking; creating and conducting meaningful workshops; giving speeches to audiences of all sizes; and instructing others on how to reach their personal goals. I have taught in classrooms and also have offered speeches to public service groups, such as AAUW and Kiwanis. I taught at elementary, middle school, high school, and university levels and I also have led workshops for adult learners.

Special Needs

Study Skills

I taught a class in study skills at Universal High School at Silver Creek in Longmont, Colorado. The class emphasized understanding individual learning styles based on Howard Gardner's theory of "Seven Kinds of Smart." Basics of time management, organization, and breaking a large task into smaller components provided the initial impetus for the course. We also discussed timeliness and prompt response to assignments. Students learned to organize multifaceted aspects of their lives in order to conserve energy and preserve time for skill-building.

Yoga

As a teacher at a regional school for exceptional children and a children's environmental program, I taught yoga postures to children from ages 5 to 15. My teaching method emphasizes proper breathing, relaxation, and finding postures that suit each individual's special needs. I can assist individuals or small groups. I received yoga training in Boulder, Colorado, with a private tutor and also have attended numerous yoga retreats, so I am familiar with diverse ways of practicing yoga, including Hatha Yoga.
