About David

Hi, my name is David. I'm a composer, music theory teacher, and oboist. I am a flexible, student-centered teacher, and I would love to help you with your musical goals. I can help you write better music, understand theory better, or even learn the oboe.

Here are some of my qualifications. I currently teach as an adjunct professor at Winthrop University, where I have taught music theory, aural skills, music technology, and rock & popular music. I am also a freelance oboist in the Charlotte area. I got to play bass oboe on Holst's "The Planets" a couple of years ago with the Charlotte Symphony. I have two degrees from Kent State University: BM in Oboe Performance and MA in Music Composition.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have a master's degree in music composition from Kent State University. I have spent the passed few years privately teaching college age composers in their efforts to write classical, indie rock, and video game music. My most recent compositional work includes long postminimalist pieces (large scale changes to short repeating musical patterns) and a series of spoken-word singing video art pieces on YouTube, where I write the words & music and also animate them myself.

Ear Training

I have been teaching music theory and aural skills at the college level since the Fall 2008 semester (at Kent State, Chicago State, and Winthrop Universities). I am the coauthor of Kent State University's freshman music theory textbook. I work regularly with students in groups and privately on their ability to sing, hear, and notate music accurately.

Music History

I teach Music Appreciation at the college level. Most recently a class I designed myself on Rock and Popular Music. I have been regularly described by my professors as a "walking music encyclopedia." I make a series of educational videos on music called "Music Corner" where I regularly combine music history, music theory, and performance to teach anyone and everyone in an entertaining and informative way.

Oboe

This coming January I will have played the oboe for 20 years. My undergraduate degree is in oboe performance. I have taught oboe lessons (and reedmaking) since I was in school. I am a freelance oboist in the Charlotte area where I have performed as a sub/extra musician with the Charlotte Symphony and played in opera and musical pits.

Sight Singing

I have been teaching music theory and aural skills at the college level since the Fall 2008 semester (at Kent State, Chicago State, and Winthrop Universities). I am the coauthor of Kent State University's freshman music theory textbook. I work regularly with students in groups and privately on their ability to sing, hear, and notate music accurately.

Songwriting

I have a master's degree in music composition, and teach private music students to write music in any style they choose. This regularly includes songwriting (words, music, etc.), listening to songs in all genres (hip-hop, rock, pop) and figuring out how to create the songs they want to make. I also teach a class in Rock and Popular Music at the college level, where I incorporate technique aspects of making music into a discussion and humanities-based format.
