I have been in the education field as a classroom teacher for 10 years. I taught mostly fourth grade, but I am licensed to teach K-6. I will work with your child's current teacher to ensure that I cover the material that your child needs. I like to cover the material needed, but I think it is important that the child has fun while learning. I will try to make the lessons interesting to each child.
Teaching is my second career. I was in the Navy for 20 years as a musician. I retired from the Navy in 2001 and after a few odd jobs landed in education. I am a member of the Association for Supervising and Curriculum Development and I receive the latest research based practices monthly. I can keep up with the newest and best practices to teach your child. I can't wait to meet you and begin our educational adventure together!!! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am an avid learner of American History. I have taught history for 10 years in the public schools at the elementary level. I have a great deal of knowledge about all of our history. I have a special knowledge about the American Civil War because I find this war fascinating. I read everything I can get my hands on about this war.
I have been in the education field for 11 years. I was a classroom teacher for 10 of those years. I am certified to teach in both North Carolina and South Carolina. I enjoy working with this age student because they want to learn and they like learning. I can teach all the subjects reading, writing, math, social studies, and science.
Most of my experience is at the fourth grade level, but I can look at the standards the students need to master and adjust my lessons to accomplish mastery of these standards.
I taught Elementary Math for the last 11 years. Most of my experience has been with fourth grade but I am certified K-6. I have used 4 different math programs, so I am a flexible teacher. I will teach your child the standards for their particular grade. I like to show the students alternative methods of finding a math answer. I will teach them the method they need to know for school, but sometimes there is an easier way to find the answer!
I have taught science for the last 11 years. Most of my experience is at the fourth grade level, but I am certified K-6. I will work with your child's teacher to ensure that your child is getting the information they need to be successful.
I have taught grammar for the last 11 years. Even when the curriculum did not emphasize grammar as a requirement, I thought it was a good idea to teach it. I like to try to make it fun to learn because sometimes grammar can be a dry subject. There are ways to make learning fun and still be effective!!
I have played guitar for 15 years. I had lessons for one year when I was starting out, but I mostly taught myself how to play. I have been in music since I was 10 years old, 42 years ago. I have a strong love of music and I like to teach young people that learning music can help you in all your learning and teach you the importance of teamwork.
I have taught reading for the last 11 years, mostly at the fourth grade level. I am certified K-6. I have used mainly the reading workshop method of teaching reading. I can very flexible. I know I can help your child with fluency, comprehension, book studies, and sounding out unknown words. The trick is to find things that the student likes and find reading texts that are about these subjects. I have a love of reading now that I did not have as a child and I like to lead students to the same love of reading that I found!!
I have taught spelling for the last 11 years. I have used many spelling programs so I am a flexible teacher. I like to find out about the program that is used in the school your child goes to and try to use a similar method. I have a program the I think works really well not only for spelling but for vocabulary as well. The program is for the 3rd and 4th grade level. If younger or older we would go with another method.
I have taught fourth grade for the last 10 years and there was a high stakes test at the end of the year that I prepared my students for. In those 10 years, I usually had 20 - 30 students per year. I know the skills needed to study for any test and I know that I can teach it well. There were only 2 students in all that time that did not pass the test at the end of the year. So I think my track record is exceptional here.
I am sure that I can teach your child methods of remembering content and I will do it in way that is fun and the student will retain the information longer.
I have played the trombone for 42 years. I was a member of the Navy Music program for 20 years. I had the honor of working with the schools to improve their performance while in the Navy. I have played professionally since 1981 and I hope to continue to play for many more years to come.
I think this is one of the most important subjects to teach. Many schools have spelling programs but do very little with vocabulary. I have a program the I think works really well not only for spelling but for vocabulary as well. The program is for the 3rd and 4th grade level. You will learn how to spell words that you are also learning their meaning and how to use them in a sentence.
I have been teaching writing for the past 11 years. Most of my experience is in the fourth grade. I have taught using the writer's workshop method but I am a flexible teacher. I like to take the good from programs and leave the bad. Writing needs to be fun, I like to always try to keep learning fun because the students learn better that way!!
