Hello, I have been actively tutoring students of all ages using Multi sensory techniques focusing on phonics/phonemic awareness for more than a decade. I've been successful in working individually with students and families each year because I individualize their programs. I became a teacher and tutor, more than ten years ago, because of my own children and because of my love for the work. I am driven by the success of each child that I see achieve his or her goals. Traveling to multiple countries, living in ten states, and understanding a diverse background is how I've lived my life. I have considerable amount of time working with students who have dyslexia, apraxia, memory, processing, and connecting speech sounds into blends. Reading and Math can become easier with the right person.
I am certified in the following: English, Agriculture, Elementary Education (k-8), and Reading. My methods and strategies, which I find most useful, have come from the Orton-Gillingham, Linda Barton approach. My goal with each student is to remain goal oriented, on task, and successful. It is important for me to assess each student regularly to ensure that measurable goals are being achieved. My specialities are: English (Grades 7-12), Science (Grades 6/7-Life Science), Math (Pre-Algebra-Pre-Calculus), Reading (All grades), Test Prep for the CA CBEST (Reading/Writing Sections), and CSET (Reading/Writing).
To ensure that students are able to learn in a comfortable study space I have an office in my home, or I am able to travel to a mutual meeting place up to the Charlotte area, Great Falls, Chester, Waxhaw, NC, and in the general vicinity.
I look forward to hearing from you and to help your child achieve his or her academic goals. I welcome all military members as well. Thank you. Dear Parents,
Hello, I have been actively tutoring students of all ages using Multi sensory techniques focusing on phonics/phonemic awareness for more than a decade. I've been successful in working individually with students and families each year because I individualize their programs. I became a teacher and tutor, more than ten years
Our family is so thankful to have found Laura! Our 7 year old child enjoys her and her teaching technique. She provides a friendly and accessible environment for him! He feels more comfortable sitting in the floor to be tutored than at a desk, and she does that! Just after a few sessions, we practice what he is taught by her! As a child that loves to come home and play outside after school, there is no complaining from him when it is the day of tutoring by Laura.
My 5th grade daughter was hesitant to be tutored, but Laura has been so welcoming and wonderful that my daughter enjoys going. I sought out a tutor because my daughter cannot spell and I believe Laura's training in Orton Gillingham methods will help my daughter.
Laura is a great tutor! I am so happy we found her!
My six year old daughter was really struggling in math last year. I am happy to say after working with Laura, she has been making major improvements. Laura also noticed other areas my daughter could work on, like her hand writing and English. She tried a few different techniques until she found the one that worked best for my daughter. She is very reliable and caring! It has been wonderful to see my daughter's confidence grow, from last school year until the present!
My daughter's math grade has already begun to improve after only two weeks. Even more important, she is learning the material, and feeling much more confident in her ability. Laura is so patient and encouraging and fun, that the young lady who claims to hate math now looks forward to her time with her math tutor!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
A certified English teacher, I have been tutoring teaching candidates in reading and writing for 5 years successfully online and one-on-one. Strategies in this subject area include focusing on an initial practice test. Together we will review each of the sections and discuss terminology related to the CBEST while continuing to examine additional core questions and examples current with today's CBEST. Test taking strategies will be focused with a passing score in mind.
I am a certified teacher in K-8 Elementary. Strategies include evidence based literacy texts and language activities geared towards involvement in inquiry and development of conceptual understanding. I offer explicit teaching in all genres of reading, writing, language, and math and direct instruction of comprehension strategies guiding learning towards theme based learning. I build upon prior knowledge, while instructing and mapping learning towards new concepts.
I have a Master's in Special Education and a Masters in Education. I am certified and currently working in Special Needs with students who range from mild to moderate disabilities, including Autism. Tutoring experience ranges greatly in this field. I've worked mostly with students who struggle with ADHD, ADD, Anxiety Disorder, Bi-Polar, Autism, PDD-NOS, OCD, Tourette's Disorder, and many combinations of Dyslexia.
One method I use to successfully help my Dyslexic Students achieve success is through multi-sensory direct instruction. Many of my students prefer direct instruction designed in an organized, predictable pattern which is systematic and explicit. Flexibility has been the key to successful teaching with all of my students.
