Since I am a proponent of a balance of phonics and sight words, my experience has shown quite a bit of success in teaching young children how to read using this approach. My students have come to my sessions as young as four years old and have left reading at the Kindergarten level prior to actually entering Kindergarten. As I follow up, I have learned that these students have gone on to read at or above grade level as they progress through their educational pursuits. Three of my students who have come through my reading tutoring sessions have been recognized as state identified gifted. One other student has been recognized by Rock Hill School District 3 as an Outstanding Reader.
My teaching experience spans over 30 years both inside and outside of the classroom in Illinois (Standard Credential), California (Life Credential), and South Carolina (Reciprocal Certificate - Expired). In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a BS degree from Grambling State University with coursework from Chicago State University, Loyola University (Chicago), and Pepperdine University. Currently, I hold a life credential from the State of California and a standard credential from the State of Illinois. My experience covers over 35+ years teaching and tutoring students in reading/phonics. For 22 years, I have used a reading/phonics method that has taken my students from non-readers to reading at or above grade level.
