About Robin

Hello! Do you need help with Spanish or English - or even math? My name is Robin B., and I am presently teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at a local public elementary school. I have been teaching English, Spanish, and ESOL in area public schools for 17 years. Working with all ages, I have many years of experience in tutoring and home bound services in all subject areas.

I can help you understand how languages work, and I can help you practice with understanding. If math is difficult for you, then I can explain it to you in a way that you will understand. It is one of the greatest joys of my life to restore the love of learning to someone who has given up. It makes me so happy to hear you say, "Yes, I can do this!"

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I taught ACT Prep classes at a previous school assignment.

ACT Reading

I taught ACT Prep classes at a previous school assignment.

Algebra 1

I have tutored many students through the years in Algebra, with pretty amazing results. I believe that I have a gift for explaining the concepts in a way that students understand more easily.

Elementary (K-6th)

Since I am certified in Spanish, I am certified to work with K-12. Besides that, I home schooled my two children for 6 years through elementary school in all subjects. I taught Spanish to the elementary children in our home school support group, and I taught classes at two local elementary schools before they added foreign languages to the regular school curriculum. Also, I worked with pre-K, assisting the lead teacher, at a private school and as a lead teacher in a daycare, so, I have experience in education with all ages.

Elementary Math

I work with all subject areas every day. Math is one of my favorite areas to teach because I can explain it to the students in a way that makes it easier to understand. Then they become excited about their ability to do the math well.

Elementary Science

Now that I am teaching in elementary school, I can help my students understand the wonder of the world through science.

English

I am certified in the state of SC in secondary English, and I home schooled my own children through grade 4 in the subject. I also teach home bound students who are in middle school, so I have experience in teaching this subject to all ages.

ESL/ESOL

I helped my non-English speaking relatives learn how to speak English, tutored families from Sweden and France, and taught English to adults in West Columbia for a semester.

Geometry

I have tutored and/or assisted home bound students in math for 25 years.

Grammar

I am certified in the state of SC to teach all aspects of secondary English/Language Arts.

Literature

I am certified in the state of SC to teach all aspects of secondary English/Language Arts. As a high school teacher, I have taught all four grade levels of Literature, including grammar and composition. I also taught my own children to read, and instilled in them a love of reading. They are both adults now, but they still are avid readers!

Phonics

Being that I am certified by the state of SC in English, and I taught both of my children to read (homeschooling), I feel that I am qualified to teach phonics. Add to that the fact that I am teaching in public school in a second language; I have become even more familiar with the sounds of letters. Although phonics is an important component of language learning, I would never use it exclusively when teaching a language. It is one tool in the toolbox.

Prealgebra

I have tutored and/or assisted home bound students in math for 25 years.

Proofreading

I am certified in the state of SC to teach all aspects of secondary English/Language Arts. As I began my teaching career as a secondary English teacher, I spent many years correcting student essays. Today I teach in another language, but one of my primary jobs is still to find the mistakes and help my students correct them.

Public Speaking

I was involved for several years in Toastmasters International, where I was vice president and then president of our local chapter.

Reading

I am certified in the state of SC to teach all aspects of secondary English/Language Arts. Reading is the most enjoyable aspect of this certification. As an avid reader, I understand the joy of reading, and I instilled that love for reading in my own children. As a teacher, I understand the importance of reading as a vehicle for all other learning. Since I home schooled my children for six years, I have experience teaching others to read, but I have found that as an English and Spanish teacher, teaching others to read continues through all age levels.

Religion

My minor studies for my Bachelor's degree were in religion. I was raised in Christianity, but I studied for several years with Hasidic rabbis in the Columbia, SC area. I have friends who are Muslim and Buddhist. I have explored many belief systems and attended many types of houses of worship.

SAT Reading

I taught SAT Prep classes at a previous school assignment. Also, I have tutored area students in SAT reading. Whether it is sentence completion, reading passages, or just managing your time well, I can give you tips to help you do your best.

SAT Writing

I taught SAT Prep classes at a previous school assignment, and I have tutored some in this area. Whether you need assistance with identifying sentence errors, improving sentences or paragraphs, or the essay structure in general, I can help you be better prepared and improve your scores.

Social Studies

Whether you need someone for elementary social studies(which primarily focuses on family and community) or for secondary social studies (which can include the social sciences, the humanities, and civic responsibility), I feel that I can help you. I taught hands-on social studies to my own children for six years. Right now I teach Leadership at a local high school, and the curriculum for the class includes all of these topics.

Spanish

I am certified in the state of SC and presently teaching Spanish at an area high school. Two years ago, I took a group of students on a trip to Spain.

Spelling

As an elementary ESOL teacher, one of the areas that I help my students the most is spelling and sight word recognition for reading. We play educational games that help them notice the words more, and this helps them become better readers, writers, and spellers. It really works!

Study Skills

After receiving my Masters degree in Education and then teaching for 17 years, I have learned many tricks of the trade. I can tell a student how to study, when it is best to study, what the environment should be like in order to promote the right kind of atmosphere for success, and what brain research says on the matter. I can teach a student what to look for in a textbook that will help him most and how to take effective notes for maximum retention. Also, I can teach fun rhymes and phrases, along with games that help one retain the information. I have always taught all of my students study skills because they do not have me with them when they are home at night preparing for a test or presentation. I have employed these methods and others with my classroom students for 17 years, and particularly with ESOL for two years; but I utilized them most with home bound students, for seven years, because these students do not receive the instruction from their classroom teacher. While they were at home with an injury or an illness I showed them how to study effectively so that they did not get behind in school.

TOEFL

As an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher, I have the training and experience to help you succeed in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English.

Vocabulary

I am certified in the state of SC to teach all aspects of secondary English/Language Arts. As a language teacher, I understand the importance of a good vocabulary base for listening, speaking, reading, and writing well. One of the things that people are continually judged by is their vocabulary, so it remains an important issue for us throughout our lifetime. If you need vocabulary help as a student, ESL vocabulary help, or assistance with speeches, I can help!

Writing

I am certified in the state of SC to teach all aspects of secondary English/Language Arts. As an English teacher, I have had the opportunity to teach others good writing skills. My favorite class to teach was a creative writing class, and I still have materials for the subject. I also enjoy writing myself and have participated in the South Carolina Writer's Workshop and other reading and writing venues.

My "Word" is All I Have

My son was struggling with the teaching method of his current Algebra Teacher. I was blessed to find Ms. Robin B. on WyzAnt. After we explained his situation, she ensured us of her ability to help improve our son's understanding of the subject. Ms. Robin B's knowledge of the subject and natural teaching ability made our son feel comfortable and more relaxed, enabling him to understand her step by
