I'm Tom P., and I'm one of the tutors here. I've taught Psychology and Latin for 10 years, both in inner city and suburban high schools around Charlotte. I’ve taught all levels of Latin, from Latin 1 to AP Latin and have taught Intro and AP Psychology and Sociology. I've also taught Mythology. I've taught using Cambridge and Ecce Romani, and studied using Jenney, back when I was in high school.
My undergrad degree is in both Psychology and Classics. I've taken graduate courses in both Psychology and Latin, but economically was never able to finish the Master's.
I've been reading Latin for some 30 years now. I was taught by priests and learned how to read, write, think and speak Latin. I've got a pretty wide background in history, art, culture, religion, philosophy and sciences in the Classical world. I've also had quite a bit of Classical Greek and have read a varied number of authors in the originals.
In terms of Psychology, I did vocation rehabilitation with a very severe, psychiatrically disabled caseload for 10 years, in addition to the training I've mentioned above. During that time, I also did volunteer work and worked with a number of human services agencies, and have experience in most aspects of applied psychology. Not only do I know Psychology from the textbook and academic ends, but also from the applied and practical ends.
If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an e-mail, or reach me through WyzAnt.

My son found Tom easy to work with and extremely "good at Latin." My son left the lesson excited because he had learned so much!
Great teacher and fun to learn with. Willing to adapt lesson and materials. Will stretch himself to accommodate children. We got other material and Tom worked it in. He also adapted multi-media material which helps.
Tom has been a wonderful tutor for my grandson. He has an excellent teaching style that my grandson can understand. Tom has been instrumental in bringing his grade up from an F to a B.
Tom is also very flexible with his schedule. He was very agreeable when I asked him to come everyday for several days before my grandson's final exam. He achieved a 91% on the exam.
I will highly recommend him and will use him in the future if my grandson needs help with anything.
I am of the opinion that tutoring is a very personality-driven activity, and as such one never knows how a student will get along with any particular tutor. Disclaimers now having been offered, I cannot praise Tom as a tutor and person highly enough. As an adult attempting to learn Latin with a ridiculous schedule, Tom is patient with my frequent lapses in memory, innovative in his techniques, and adaptable to my irregular study habits. I look forward to learning from him, and hope others will find him as excellent as I do. Thanks Tom!
Tom is the best tutor we have had at Wyzant. He is very intelligent in all areas of education. Teaching Latin for many years has afforded Tom of being a great tutor. I would also describe Tom as having the patience of a saint. He understands my son's weaknesses and tries different avenues for him to learn his lessons. I would definitely recommend Tom for any Latin or English needs; you will see an improvement in your student after even one tutoring session.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've been teaching Latin for 10 years; mostly inner city, but also some suburban public students, as well. I just started tutoring for WyzAnt. Having been taught by priests, I'm very proficient in Classical Latin and have tutored Classical Greek, as well. I have also taught mythology and have a background in comparative religions in the Classical World. I'm pretty academic, but have a strong background in teaching a variety of students and have a pretty differentiated repertoire of methods.
