About Darrin

I know that I have God to thank for my success and through it I give Him all the praise.

As you may see from my "photo" I am not your normal tutor.

I have had many years of experience as a private tutor in a variety of areas. Whether it be that I was working with a student who was home bound due to behavioral or emotional issues which otherwise prevented the child from learning in a school environment or tutoring my fellow classmates in Computer Science before taking the course myself I have been blessed with a 98% success rate especially when it comes to dealing with difficult students. With each student there are several things that I like to keep the same and others that are based solely on the individual. For example, the needs of the student are first and foremost of paramount importance and therefore, dictate what will be taught, reviewed, etc ... as well as the approach to the material. I have learned that although most people are visual learners; myself included, not everyone is and so I have to tailor my style to meet the individual's needs. I enjoy kidding around but when it is time to be serious and really focus, I expect the student to comply. I am not above sitting down with the student and or parents to discuss behavior, attitude, or any other areas which may hinder the student's learning and growth. I tend to be a less of a multitask oriented person and focus more about one thing till it is complete rather than start something and move on to another and then go back to the initial task if it can be helped. I will work on the task at hand until the student becomes the teacher; it is my philosophy that if you know a subject well enough, then you can teach it. I believe that once a week is not as good as twice a week for no other reason than what you do on Monday, if you do not reinforce it through review, will not become part of your long term memory as easily as if it is learned on Monday and reviewed on Wednesday or even Friday. That being said, I offer the following list of qualifications:

I am a graduate of Westminster Choir College with a Bachelor of Music in Education Degree focusing on voice, and I hold a Master's of Arts in Liberal Studies Degree from SUNY Stony Brook in NY which focused on Continuing Education courses.

•I have had choral experience as a singer since the 4th grade (both paid and volunteer) and as a conductor as well. I was the choir director at St. Philip Neri Church in Fort Mill under Mrs. Ellen Oberer for 2 years. I have been a paid cantor, as well as a member of the Schola Cantorum for St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Charlotte Presently I am a substitute cantor and volunteer choir member and parishioner at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Rock Hill.

•I have taught voice lessons privately for over ten years working with young children to adults, and I am happy to help in any way I can. As part of my voice teaching, I give lessons in theory to help my students to better understand what they are singing. I believe that it is the process not the product which is most important and I like to see my students improve as much as possible.
I have taught in public and Catholic K-5 and K-8 schools as a music teacher and am familiar with the State and National Standards. My teaching experience does not stop there as I have held long term substitute positions in schools on Long Island NY, Asheville, NC, and now in Rock Hill SC. I have substitute taught almost every subject and in every grade level from K5-12th including in one of my graduate level courses, while taking the course!
•In addition to the above school related qualifications, I have worked for Sylvan Learning Centers in Babylon NY and Islip NY first as a part-time tutor, then as a Director of Education, and finally as an Independent Consultant at which time I not only tutored Reading, Math to level 8, Study Skills, and SAT prep, but I was also involved in Test Administration, Conferencing, Interviewing new candidates for tutors and attendees, as well as acting Executive Director when the need arose. One of my students, a 49 year old woman who had suffered a head injury went from reading at a 4th grade reading level to a 9th grade reading level in a matter of 6 months.

•I am a professional caricaturist. My company name is Caricatures for Christ. As the sole proprietor, I oversee all aspects of the job from direct contact with clients in the form of setting up contracts, to creation of the artwork, to receiving payment. All of this varied experience, I believe, has given me the knowledge which I need to be a more engaging teacher, a better manager of the people entrusted to my care whether employees, or students, and the ability it takes to be flexible in whatever role I am given.
I know that I have God to thank for my success and through it I give Him all the praise.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

Being a practicing Catholic and reading Holy Scripture daily, God has given me the grace to not only read His word but at most times to understand it and if I don't understand it then I have many resources at my disposal which can give me better understanding of what I am reading. My wife and I have taught our daughter about the Bible, about our faith and about God from when she was an infant. So I know that given the opportunity, I could do the same with someone else.

I have been drawing for 37 years, I am a professional caricaturist, illustrator, and portrait artist, as well as private drawing instructor on and off for the past 13 years.

Having English as my native language can be seen as a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that I understand it very well both the written and spoken word, and a curse that I have developed some not so great habits over the years. However, I have learned to go beyond these minor issues and when I am working with someone who needs assistance in the subject whether it is phonics, syntax, grammar, or any other area of Language Arts, I can give them the help they need since I have experienced challenges within the subject and overcome them.

General Computer

I know that learning technology for people that are unfamiliar with it can be frustrating so I work to make it easier to understand for my students. When I was in college I tutored the computer science course before taking the class so I am a bit of a "techie". Since I learn software, and hardware quickly I can teach people how to use with minimal hassle. I am patient with all my students, young an old, and I am willing to go at my student's pace.

General Music

I hold a degree in Music Education and have taught general music K-5th for the past five years. Within such time I have seen my students grow not only in their musicianship, but also as people and performers. One of the main focuses for me with my students was the getting to understand the technical aspects so that they could learn to enjoy it more.

One of the biggest proponents of the Sylvan Learning Center's system of teaching reading is Phonics. As a former director of Education for Sylvan, I recognize how this can help a student who is either in need of reading recovery or a student who is learning to read for the first time. As the first educators of our children, parents speak to their children before a word is put into the symbols we call letters so it is only natural for us to hear a sound and learn what it is when we see it.

Public Speaking

As a teacher one of the things that we constantly do is engage in a form of public speaking. As a performer, whether in theatrical productions, or in small readings, etc, public speaking is an integral part of what is expected and performed each time. With this type of experience, it is not difficult to teach someone to be a better public speaker. The fact that I am a voice teacher/vocal coach allows me to use the knowledge and techniques I have learned and created to be a better singer and by association, a better speaker.

Theatre has been a part of my teaching for the past 13 years insofar as that in order to engage my students, I have relied on my acting abilities whether it is a change of accent, voice, impersonation, or some form of movement which keeps there focus or brings them back to focus. This is just a part of me and it helps me when I am teaching someone the art of memorization, or just teaching something which may be considered a boring topic to the students.

Voice (Music)

I have been a voice teacher/vocal coach on and off for over 10 years. One of my students recently auditioned for the first time for America's Got Talent. I was the first winner of St. Philip Neri Italian Festival Idol contest in Fort Mill SC. I regularly sing with St. Anne's Church choir and I am a semi-professional soloist as well.
