In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an artist, drawing or mark making is the foundation for every other art form. My experience from drawing began at age 3 and still continues. I have experience in portraiture, lanscape, still life, illustration. I was trained by a practicing artist throughout high school (Orangeburg Wilkinson). From there, I attended Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC where I obtained a BFA in General Studio Art. I focused on graphic design, drawing, illustration, and photography. To earn extra income while in college, I worked as a caricature artist at Carowinds. Afterwards, I began teaching on a voluntary basis at three local rec centers and later, 7th and 8th grade art.
The most important aspects of being able to draw are understanding your elements and principles of art. This understanding will help you look at your world in a new way. You will see that everything in existence can be broken down into simple lines, shapes, and forms. I will train you to see those elements and thereby render them. You will learn to use gesture as well to increase your speed and confidence in drawing. With an open mind and a willingness to learn I am confident that you will succeed as an artist.
While teaching, I earned an MA in Art Education with a focus on painting and mixed media. As a freelance artist, I've sold paintings to a few clients and I'm currently pursuing gallery exhibitions. I recently won 3rd place in painting at the 2010 SC State Fair. When it comes to painting, the same skills you learn in drawing help with painting. The same elements and principles apply as well. What I love most about painting is the freedom. Though I paint with traditional training, I incorporate alternative media to enhance the meaning of my works. Writing is a big component of my work. Materials such as wood, newspaper, glue, and sand are just a few items I like to dabble with. I've even gone to the extent of using sliced bread as a viable material. As you can tell, art is limitless.
I am influenced by the masters such as Michaelangelo and Rembrandt. I am also influenced by Pop Artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, and Robert Rauchenburg. Though I don't condone vandalism I'm inspired by the works of graffiti artist like Banksy and Poster Boy. The influence of these artists combined with the affects of the day to day make me the artist I am. This is something I absolutely love to do and hope that you, the budding artist, find that same passion that I have.
